A few years back, in the novelization David Gerrold did of the Deep Space Nine. Original series crossover, set within The Trouble with Tribbles, he mentions in the introduction that he was given a small part. Upon being handed a red shirt, he immediately looked for a bulls eye on the back.

I watched all that stuff and never once thought about the perils of the red shirt until it was pointed out to me a few years ago.
