My Short Story Reading at Noir At The Bar

At Noir At The Bar at The Wild Detectives last month, I read my short story, "Bars Of The Heart." First published back in 1996 in the print magazine, Show and Tell, folks seemed to have liked it. I have put it on the PAGES section of my blog at https://kevintipplescorner.blogspot.com/p/short-story-bars-of-heart.html

Very good story, Kevin. Several twists toward the end, and pretty dark. The inspiration for the story was chilling.

We got married up in Boston in the same church Sandi's parents were married in decades earlier. The plane home, which had an engine problem that delayed us by three hours, was hit by lightning somewhere over TexArkana. We lost all cabin lighting and the air thingies dropped from the ceiling.

After about another forty minutes with nothing better we came in for DFW where it was storming. As we came closer and closer, we could see fire trucks and ambulances lining the runway. The pilot came on and told us he had declared an emergency, they had cleared the airspace, and we were landing as fast as possible and not to freak over the crash equipment as it was just a precaution. Easier said then down when we are yo yoing all over the sky.

So, as we land we are all bent over in the crash position with attendant screaming at us to stay down. We slammed into the runway, bounced up, and hit twice more before staying down. Then the right-side landing gear starts disintegrating as the tires blow and we end up down on the metal sliding along. As we drift to a stop the plane turns partially sideways and we can see all the rescue stuff screaming down the runway at us.

We eventually get off the plane and end up walking to the terminal. Find out later that we were hit by windshear just off the run way about a mile out and again as we landed. Our crash landing is part of the record explaining what happened to 191.
