Review: "Military Fly Moms: Sharing Memories, Building Legacies, Inspiring Hope" by Linda Maloney

Military Fly Moms: Sharing Memories, Building Legacies, Inspiring Hope was compiled and edited  retired naval aviator Linda Maloney to honor past aviators and inspire future generations. This colorful book covers 71 women who were and are moms and pilots. These true stories remind all that being a mom as well as a military pilot is difficult and there are sacrifices that are made to achieve that goal.

The book is broken up into the various services with the pilots listed in alphabetical order with in each section. Each pilot has at least one picture, usually with family, and a multipage spread providing background. The spread often explains the family history, the pilot’s own personal history, and perspective about being a pilot and motherhood along with some basic service facts such as rank, years’ service, current military status, etc. There is also a red ink highlighted section “Mom to Mom” where a personal point is made.

After detailing pilots in the Army, Navy, Air Force/Air National Guard, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, the book moves into brief humor snippets from various moms, followed by a brief section on humorous comments and insights from the their children as related by the moms. The book closes with a glossary, a photo index, and author biography. Published by Tannenbaum Publishing in April 2012 a portion of the profits from each sale of the book are being donated to the nonprofit charity, Girls With Wings, Inc. More information on them can be found at their website http://girlswithwings.com/

This paperback coffee table style book is a well done tribute to the moms who also serve in this nation’s military branches. A sacrifice and a service that often does not get the attention it should. This book does a little bit to rectify that while inspiring new generations of potential female pilots.
