DC: Mech by Kenny Porter is an Elseworlds tale with a cool concept. At the end of World War II,
Earth was attacked by Darkseid and his Parademons. Utilizing advanced
technology, Parademons have become giant aliens the size of skyscraper type buildings.
The JSA repelled the initial invaders at a significant cost to the team. Soon afterwards,
the surviving JSA members attempted to prepare for the next wave of the
invasion by creating giant mechs.
Sometime, decades later, the Justice League,
a group of vigilante mechs, is formed. Just after that happens, Superman lands
on Earth, which has become over the decades xenophobic despite the fact that
several of the heroes who died to defend the Earth were aliens themselves. It
takes Superman some time to join this version of the Justice League and to gain
the trust of his new team. He does this while attempting to deal with his own
personal baggage of being the survivor of a dead world. The Justice League and all
of humanity also knows that Darkseid and his army are coming again to destroy
the Earth and murder everyone.
This tale has plenty of action and terrific art. If you want to see giant battles involve mechs vs giant aliens, then you have come to the right place. My main criticism of this tale is that the creative team played it so safe. I wish there were more deviations to this universe. The ending teases way more for this universe, but nothing has been announced so far. Overall, I enjoyed this tale. I just wish they took more advantage of the fact that this is Elseworlds tale.
