Scott's Take: Thundercats Vol 2: Roar by Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss

Thundercats Vol 2: Roar by Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss continues the new Thundercats series that begins with Thundercats Vol 1: Omens. This volume collects issues 6-10 that spotlight various members of the team going on solo adventures until the big team up at the end. This is a set up for a future volume as a lot of plot points are created for future use.

Panthro takes the Thundertank on a solo run to search for new power sources for the Thundercats and to help cool off from his fight with Lion-0. Instead, he encounters new enemies as the vulture mutants are introduced. Tygra still healing from his injuries is attempting to use the spaceship as parts to build their new home when he is thrown back in time. The kids Willykat and Wilykit go off on their own to have some fun and encounter a pyramid and decide to go exploring into it. There are even several pages that are focused on fleshing out the bad guys more and adding some grey to the conflict between the Thundercats and the Mutants as the bad guys get some highlighting.

The art continues to succeeded as battles are frantic and action packed. The various characters and environment are depicted well.

There are some character decisions made here that are frankly dumb. I am not a fan of adult characters that are experienced warriors making decisions that as a reader one can tell is going to cause problems later. In this case, several characters learn things that they decide to keep to themselves for various reasons. Clearly, in every case, the groups should have been told the information and the reasons to hold back are dumb. The kids make a big mistake here but they are kids so it’s realistic. But, the adults are supposed to be very experienced at this point so it does not make much sense for them.

I read this through my local library.

I am glad that the Dallas Public Library System chose to get both hardback volumes as Hoopla only has the second volume of the series and the prequel Cheetara series. This series will continue in a volume 3 at some point.

The only known information that I could find is that Lion-O goes off to confront Mumma-Ra alone in his place off power which sounds like a great plan. Yep, go off and fight Mumma-Ra where he is strongest and surrounded by his army. Don’t take any of your experienced warrior friends. Yep, this will totally work out well. No flaws. Five out of five plan.

My hardback reading copy came from the Lochwood Branch of the Dallas Public Library System. Great branch with great people. I just wish they could get the AC fixed and that the place was open on Sundays like many other branches are each week.
