The Last Ronin: A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Novel by Erik Burnham adapts The Last Ronin comic into a prose novel. In this novel set in the far future, New York is a dystopia ruled by the Foot Clan led by the Shredder’s grandson. The last surviving Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle has returned to New York to climb the Foot Clan tower and kill him. He is on a suicide mission out for revenge against the man who killed his family.

This is a violent novel full of death, dismemberment and plenty of action. The story is told from three main perspectives with some flashbacks to how the Turtles died and other flashbacks. The deceased turtles are frequently around as ghosts to bug the Last Ronin.

 

I enjoyed the novel way more than I enjoyed the comic book version. My two main complaints with the book are the same ones I had regarding the comic book version. The main villain is too generic and uninteresting. The Last Turtle is stripped of personality in order to have the mystery of the identity of the turtle survivor. Once the identity is revealed to the reader, the Last Turtle is still depicted as nothing more than the generic revenge seeker.

 

Still, I would recommend this book. By the way, there is a video game and a movie adaption being worked on for this story. Hopefully, both will address these issues.

Library Update and Other Pandemic Thoughts

As the infection case count and death count climbs here in Dallas County, many things are continuing to reopen by order of the Governor over the objections of our local leaders who are following the science and CDC guidelines. Things are getting slowly worse. Scott and I remain at home in seclusion. 

Amazon Fresh delivers groceries as we soon learned that using Kroger/InstaCart was an epic failure. Doing this is costing me about thirty extra bucks a week on the grocery bill BEFORE one adds in the mandatory ten dollar tip. For now, I still have the monies to do  this, but it can not go on forever. 

The only time we leave, about once a week, is to go to a nearby strip shopping center where there is a free standing postal drop box that we use to mail the mail. We then come straight home most of the time though now and then we swing by a couple of grocery stores to drift through the parking lots to see how many folks--males and females--are going in and out while choosing not to wear masks. It usually is a lot of folks and equally split between the genders. 

I miss the library and bookstores. Some of the bookstores are sort of open as some are allowing some walk in traffic. As I am at high risk from this damn thing, we still are not back in our favorite bookstores.

The library, which closed in the middle of March, remains closed. While nothing much officially has been said to this point, my books that were due this Friday are now due August 31st. Scott's books that had been set by the library system to be due June 1st have also been moved to August 31st. So, it is clear that things will remain closed for the foreseeable future. 

We are supposed to have our physical late next week. This was a reschedule from three weeks ago as I was terrified to go in and run the risk. I do need to be checked out, but, at the same time I have great fear about going in anywhere...especially a medical office. 

So....this is where we are at while the pandemic rages on in our little part of the world. Stay safe and stay well.
