Demon In White by Christopher
Ruocchio is book three in The Sun Eater series and is a
complicated book to review since the jacket synopsis does a very poor job of
explaining the actual plot. What happens in the book is far different than the
jacket copy. Basically, Hadrian is back fighting the aliens and the cyborg
faction of humanity who have teamed up to take on the empire. The aliens have a
new leader who is smarter, a better leader than previous leaders at fighting
humanity.
The war against the enemy is not helped
by the issues within as he has to deal with politics and infighting. He also
still has questions about his resurrection and what The Quiet want with him.
After his death and resurrection, people are starting a cult focused on him.
Hadrian wants them to stop and they show no sign of stopping their worship.
All of the above is just barely scratching
the surface of this wide-ranging story that twists and turns. Some plot lines
are introduced early on only to be completely discarded much later in the book.
It is a long book that at points does feel way too long because of a lack of
editing. There are things that have been added to the world building here that do
not seem relevant to the current book.
This might be a complaint that just I
have, but it feels like another book must have taken place between book two and
three. Since I have not read the short stories tied into this universe, that
might explain the time skip resent in this novel. It certainly is not explained
in this read.
Demon In White: The Sun Eater: Book Three by Christopher Ruocchio also introduces a group of flying aliens who are allies to the humans. These were fun characters that highly entertaining and quickly grew on me as characters. They make a wonderful addition to the series.
If you enjoyed the first two books of the series, you will probably enjoy this one. The fourth book, Kingdoms of Death, is out now. Hopefully, my library system will order a copy soon.
My reading copy came from the Lakewood
Branch of the Dallas Public Library System.
