Short Story Wednesday Review: Absent The Soul: A Collection Of Short Mysteries by BJ Bourg

From the massive and magnificent archive...

Reviewing an anthology or a collection is tough. Unlike a novel where one sets up the premise of the book and then comments on how the book works, an anthology or collection can’t be reviewed that way. Instead, the reviewer has to look for not only an overall theme of the work but two or three stories that illustrate that point.

Absent The Soul: A Collection of Short Mysteries is a collection of short stories revolving around the theme of murder. Told through various character viewpoints, the stories often reflect the repercussions of murder on the families involved. It is hard to pick out any as being better than the rest as they are all very good. However, here are some selections which clearly are based on my own particular tastes.

“A Picture Perfect Murder” works off the idea of a cheating spouse as does many a country western song, movie of the week, or true crime book. Here murder is inspired by the cheating spouse and the story gives rise to the real question as to who is the real victim? The same premise or idea is also skillfully worked a few pages later in the story, “Hell Hath No Fury.”

It isn’t just spouses that serve as impetus to these stories. Children do too and one of the more powerful examples can be found in “My Daughter’s Keeper.” Sometimes speaking for the dead crosses boundaries with huge life changing implications for all. At nearly 40 pages in length, this story builds with relentlessness until that final shocking twist.

Another of the longer stories is “A Badge Like Mine.” A cynical internal affairs investigator finds out that a simple abuse case can lead to murder.

The final story packs a punch unlike any of the others. “Heartbeat To Hell” slides over the genre line from suspenseful mystery to horror for this reader. A category that I don’t read but before I knew where the story was going, I was two pages from the end. I couldn’t stop there and I promise this story will leave you shaking.

So, there you have it. My selections from a highly entertaining collection that stretches boundaries and view points. While murder is the common theme in each story, the repercussions of murder are a constant background component. From shattered families to honest investigator cops who may be driven to cross the line into vigilantism, to the cynical cop burned out cases ago and everything in-between, the repercussions are huge. In each story character development is highly effective as is the premise and plot which as a result brings the story alive for the reader. You can’t ask for much more and that makes this book good stuff.

Review: Flash Bang Mysteries: Summer 2020 Issue 20

The cover story for Flash Bang Mysteries: Summer 2020 Issue 20 is “Prophetic Words” by Bruce Harris. The Tenement Bar and Grill may be dated in many ways, but Peter likes the place. It helps that they are the only bar that carries his beer preference. It would be smart not to screw up a good thing. It is questionable how smart Peter is this day.

Professor Chen fell down the stairs and is very much dead in “Light and Shadow” by Daria Davis. The question is what this will mean for his research assistant, Alicia Croft, and Professors Anderson and Selwyn. The on campus and very public death of the Department Head will have ripple effects.

Waking up painfully hungover is bad enough. Waking up painfully hungover in a Prius is Marie’s fate as “Looking For Ida’s Chevy” by Bud Sabelhaus begins. She hopes no tattoos were involved this time.

The Editor’s Choice story for this issue is “Dress Rehearsal” by Herschel Cozine. Everyone knows you really should not take your job home with you. Brad does in this gripping tale.

As one expects from this market run by B. J. Bourg and his son, Brad, the latest issue is another good one. Four short tales that each pack a punch in their own way. Flash Bang Mysteries Summer 20220 issue 20 is another fast and fun read. Despite the fact it is a well paying market, the read is free and can be found online here.

Review: Flash Bang Mysteries: Spring 2020 Issue 19

Recently Flash Bang Mysteries: Spring 2020 Issue 19 was released by the father and son team of BJ Bourg and Brandon Bourg. The issue contains four interesting short stories.

Selected as the cover story, “The Fourth Amendment” by John Bowers has Chief Carpenter appearing in the chambers of Judge Martin as he wants a warrant.  In fact, he needs that warrant. Chief Carpenter has to convince the judge to see things his way in the pursuit of justice.

Sunday is the one day a week that Pearl and Henry eat out at local pub and take a walk to the nearby museum at the castle. Henry bought as annual pass, believing it a wise investment, and made sure Pearl did the same. Education is important and yet Henry does not know everything in “A Fitting Sendoff” by Madeleine McDonald.

Taking photographs correctly is always important. It is even more so when one is taking pictures of the deceased. As Lacy has found over the years, change the light source, change the angle, and the pictures reveal evidence. The latest victim clearly has some evidence on her and Lacy is working hard to document it all in “Shadows” by Jemi Fraser.

The editor’s choice of the issue is “Sweet Spot” by Bruce Harris. Steve “Stoney” Stevens has a bakery in downtown Denver. An interview on the very popular news show is going to skyrocket his success if he handles himself just right.

The four short stories here are all quick reads and all four are good ones. With a submission cap of 700 words, each author quickly sets the scene and moves the action along to conclusion. A lot of stuff is at work in each tale as are a couple of surprises. Flash Bang Mysteries: Spring 2020 Issue 19 is another quick and fun read. You can read the current issue as back issues for free online here.

FREE BOOK ALERT: BUT NOT FORGOTTEN by BJ Bourg

BUT NOT FORGOTTEN by BJ Bourg is again currently available as a FREE read over at Amazon. I first told you about this one back in April 2016 in my review. This is the first book in the Clint Wolf series and well worth your time. Just go get it!

Amazon Synopsis:

Embattled former detective Clint Wolf is the newly appointed police chief for Mechant Loup, a small swampy town in southeast Louisiana. Usually a quiet town, the tranquility of the place is shattered when a human arm is found in the jowls of an alligator. Once it’s determined the arm belongs to a reputable business owner, the race is on to find the man and figure out what happened to him. Little does Clint know that solving the case could unearth a plot so evil it would go down as the worst event in Louisiana history . . . and he might not live to see it.

(Author's Note: While this book ends on a cliffhanger, the mystery is 100% resolved at the end, and it is a complete novel. The cliffhanger relates to peril--not plot. Book 2 contains a new and separate mystery that is also resolved at the end, and Book 3 wraps up the trilogy with another new and separate mystery.)

FREE Book Alert

BJ Bourg's JAMES 516 is currently free at amazon. My January 2015 review of the book when it was with a different publisher is here. As I wrote before in that review--- The book is compelling and intense from start to finish and one heck of a read.

From the Amazon synopsis....

Could a deep and dark secret be behind the sniper-style killing of a sheriff’s office captain, or is it simply the work of a madman with a rifle? Whatever the case, the killer is taunting the cops with a mysterious message, and Police Sniper London Carter is determined to decipher the message and capture the murderer. Will London solve the mystery in time, or will more officers die before he can bring the killer to justice?

A tense and exciting read with a surprise ending that most never see coming.

The 2016 EPIC eBook Awards Winner for Best Mystery!

(NOTE: The London Carter Novels are a spin-off of the Magnolia Parish Novels, with JAMES 516 taking place four years after HOLLOW BOND.)

Sneak Peek: Flash Bang Mysteries - Winter/January 2017 Issue

BJ Bourg posted the message below to the SMFS list late yesterday evening. The issue will go live around the 1st.

It's hard to believe we're already getting set to publish the sixth issue of Flash Bang Mysteries, but here it is, the awesome lineup for the Winter/January 2017 Issue:

BEAUTY by Bruce Harris
BUNKER MENTALITY by Craig Faustus Buck
MEAN GIRL by Barbara Eliasson
THE GIFT by C.M. Saunders
THE GUEST ROOM by John Frain
UNSIGNED, SEALED, AND DELIVERED by John M. Floyd

As always, I appreciate every author who submitted work for this issue (whether accepted or not), and I hope they all know they are the ones who make this a great little e-zine.

Take care one and all!

Author BJ Bourg has announced that, in honor of Mother's Day and all mothers everywhere, he has made THE SEVENTH TAKING: A Mountain Mystery free for the week.

Amazon Synopsis:

"THE SEVENTH TAKING is the chilling tale of a young man’s journey through harsh mountain country in his search for the girl he loves, and the two friends who dare to brave the dangerous elements—both human and natural—to support a friend.

When Joy Vincent disappears in the Blue Summit Mountains of Tennessee while vacationing with her family, park rangers begin an intensive search for the Louisiana high school junior. Seven weeks later, the search is abandoned and authorities conclude that Joy voluntarily ran away because of a fight with her father.

Unwilling to believe it, Abraham Wilson makes the long drive to the mountains and sets off on a journey that will change his life--and the lives of his friends, Brett Lester and Charlie Rickman--forever. Will they discover the secret behind Joy's disappearance, or will they meet with the same fate?

Books By Mail

I have not done a post like this in quite some time. I might not have done it now if my Verizon e-mail did not keep going out. There have been repeated problems the last six weeks or so. Whether or not it has anything to do with their sale of their interest in this area to some outfit called Frontier I have no idea. But, it is annoying.

Anyway, in no particular order, here are the books I have gotten in the last few days by way of the mail....

Big time thanks to all involved for shipping the reads my way.

Review: "But Not Forgotten: A Novel" by BJ Bourg

Two years after a night out with his family became a tragedy that still haunts him, Clint Wolf has moved to the small Louisiana of Mechant Loup. He is the new Chief of Police and is lucky to survive his first day on the job and a close encounter with an alligator.

Someone else was not so lucky as soon an alligator is found with an arm in its mouth. The search for the owner of the arm eventually results in the recovery of a body that has been shot in the head. A murder in their midst is just the surface of the swamp in the latest mystery from Louisiana author B. J. Bourg titled But Not Forgotten.

Rich in setting and characters this mystery read powers along from start to finish. Author B. J. Bourg stirs in elements of a romance, mixed martial arts, and plenty of local politics and law enforcement details to make But Not Forgotten a must read. Like his novel James 516 released last year, the world of law enforcement plays a strong role in the read while making those involved very much human and not the sterile, non-feeling types often portrayed in the media.

But Not Forgotten touches familiar themes of the author’s work such as honesty, doing the job correctly under difficult conditions, and integrity while also providing a deep backstory and plenty of current mystery. Multiple things are at work in the read and steadily builds to a very strong climax in a mystery that hopefully is the start of a series.
