Self-Publishing: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Self-publishing can be very freeing and lucrative for some, but it isn’t for everyone. Janis Patterson learned how to self-publish the hard way and is happy to share what she knows.

Explore the ins and outs of publishing your own books. Learn about formats, ISBNs, covers, and all the details of being your own publisher. Find out the differences between doing it yourself and hiring a book packager. Get an idea of the costs involved. Maybe most importantly, learn what not to do.

Janis Patterson, who also writes as Janis Susan May, Janis Susan Patterson, and JSM Patterson, published her first novel with Dell in 1979 and has been writing more or less ever since. She has also worked as an actress and singer, talent agent, Supervisor of Accessioning for a genetic testing lab, document checker for a travel agency, editor in chief of two multi-magazine publishing groups, and was the editor/publisher of the only monthly publication for the American Research Center in Egypt in the world. Janis Susan is a Founder and Charter Member of Romance Writers of America and a regional Board Member for MWA, as well as being a member of Sisters In Crime, NINC, and the Author’s Guild. She has been self-publishing since 2013.

REMINDER: MWA Dallas meeting on Saturday, May 7, 2016

Panel Discussion: Everything You Wanted to Know About the Book Business but Were Afraid to Ask

It's time again to face the Gang of Four - and ask any and all questions you were afraid to ask in polite company. In this forum, honesty rules, and that's not always polite. Respectful, yes, but some questions unfit for "polite society" can be asked and answered.

Presented by Your Friendly Gang of Four

LaRee Bryant, Sandy Steen, Janis Susan May Patterson, and James Gaskin have collectively written millions of words and scores of books ranging from mysteries to gothics to romance to urban fantasy to young adult to humor to children's books to cozies to technical to country line dancing (place your bets on who wrote THAT book) and more.

Bring your questions, bring your answers, and bring your appetite because the give and take and delightful discussions should last well into lunch.

Some smart person once said there is no one right road to success, but many wrong ones. Let's help each other stay off the wrong roads and out of the bad neighborhoods.

Doors open at the Olive Garden at 10:00 AM. Official fun stuff starts a bit after that.
Bonus: a report from the NETWO Conference in Mt. Pleasant. Not as good as attending the conference, but you'll hear some highlights, interesting stories, and knowledge nuggets.

Chief Frank Returns!

This was the bio in the local paper when Chief Frank joined the City of Corinth PD as Administrative Lieutenant assigned to the office of the Chief of Police:

McElligott is a thirty-seven year law enforcement veteran and started his law enforcement career with the Greece Police Department in upstate New York. He moved to Plano in 1979 and joined the Plano Police Department where he served in various capacities such as patrol, criminal investigations, narcotics, professional standards, crime prevention training division and supervised the hostage negotiation team. After 28 years, McElligott retired from Plano PD and became the chief of police in Hutchins. During his six and a half years as chief, Hutchins achieved recognized status from the Texas Police Chiefs Best Practices program as well as developed numerous crime prevention initiatives.

We, of course, know Chief Frank as the "criminal whisperer" able to identify, track, and arrest criminals, then tell us those stories with an extra side of funny.

UPDATE--- MWA Meeting canceled for Saturday, Dec 7

Received this update a few minutes ago...

We bravely face blank sheets of white paper, but blank sheets of white road ice is another story entirely. No meeting on Saturday, December 7.

As always, we skip the first Saturday of the year to avoid intruding on the New Year's Day hangovers, er, festivities.

See everyone Saturday, February 1, 2014.

James
