September 2, 2017 - Shelley Kaehr, Ph.D. "The Wacky and Unpredictable World of Writing and Publishing."
Shelley
Kaehr, Ph.D. began her writing career as a newspaper editor-in-chief.
She opened a publishing company in 1994 and became a nationally known
past life regressionist and authority on the practical applications of
gems and stones after authoring dozens of books on the mind-body
connection. Her work has been featured on such programs as Coast to Coast AM with George Noory and William Shatner’s Weird or What.
Shelley
also writes horror and science fiction under the pen name Annette
Shelley and romance under the pen name Leah Leonard. When she's not
writing, Shelley loves to travel and owns a Cruise Planners
franchise. She is a member of the Horror Writer's Association and NTMWA
and will talk to our group about her experiences in the wacky and
unpredictable world of writing and publishing.

At our June meeting, nationally-recognized author Harry Hall will present, “How to Create and Leverage a Press Kit.”
Harry has written two books, most recently, The Pedestriennes,
America’s Forgotten Superstars, the first book ever written on the
professional endurance walkers whose on and off the track exploits
dazzled America in the latter 19th century. It has won a Mayborn and
Independent Publisher’s (IPPY) Award.
Additionally,
for the past 20 years, Harry has taught public speaking at the
University of Dallas and SMU. He frequently presents at writers
conferences.
Harry lives in Grand Prairie, Texas with his wife Susie and son Zane.

Chief Frank Returns!
This
was the bio in the local paper when Chief Frank joined the City of
Corinth PD as Administrative Lieutenant assigned to the office of the
Chief of Police:
McElligott is a
thirty-seven year law enforcement veteran and started his law
enforcement career with the Greece Police Department in upstate New
York. He moved to Plano in 1979 and joined the Plano Police Department
where he served in various capacities such as patrol, criminal
investigations, narcotics, professional standards, crime prevention
training division and supervised the hostage negotiation team. After 28
years, McElligott retired from Plano PD and became the chief of police
in Hutchins. During his six and a half years as chief, Hutchins achieved
recognized status from the Texas Police Chiefs Best Practices program
as well as developed numerous crime prevention initiatives.
We,
of course, know Chief Frank as the "criminal whisperer" able to
identify, track, and arrest criminals, then tell us those stories with
an extra side of funny.

We’ve all attended book signings that were held in quasi-sterile environments amidst quiet conversation, where you stood around for a few minutes, then after some low-key congratulations, and a quick book purchase, left unimpressed.
Yours can be different. You can have your friends, family and acquaintances fill a room, stand in line to purchase your book and still have a good time.
Book signings are a perfect venue for authors to highlight their work and showcase their talents.
But too many fail to capitalize.
At our August meeting, nationally-recognized author Harry Hall will present, “Make Your book Signing a Wow!” in which he will show us how to conduct successful book signings, from publicity to venue selection.

In honor of the Fourth of July, the "Gang of Four" will take their seats in the spotlight to answer any and all questions about writing, publishing, marketing, and the Meaning of Life (spoiler alert: 42). All questions about all areas of writing and more will be discussed and explained by leveraging the panelist's years of experience fighting the battle. Successes and scars highlighted equally.Bring your questions, bring your answers, and bring your appetite because the give and take with associated arguments may last well into lunch.
Some smart person once said there is no one right road to success, but many wrong ones. Let's help each other stay off the wrong roads
Note: because of fire safety laws, all the fireworks will be verbal rather than thermal.

Steampunk - What is it and how can I make it my own?
Melissa MacGregor was born in Dallas, and traveled the world as a Navy brat. Much of her childhood was spent in Scotland, where she fell in love with all things Edinburgh. Upon her return to Texas, she wrote a weekly article for her hometown's paper, serializing the happenings within her high school. A graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University, Melissa majored in English and History, with a minor in Sociology.
She attended law school long enough to realize that writing was her true passion. She has a deep love of History, a sick addiction to research, and an undying appreciation of sports. Her heart is divided between a small town near Dallas (and the 100-year old farmhouse inherited from her grandparents), and an even smaller village at the foot of the Scottish Highlands, both of which always welcome her home.
In 2015, Melissa was chosen by SMU libraries as one of the year's Top Ten Haute Young Authors.
Melissa is a member of International Thriller Writers, Mystery Writers of America, Romance Writers of America and The Clandestine Cake Club.

We're moving Critique Day back to November so we can
welcome Kathleen Kent as our October 4th speaker.
Kathleen Kent is the author of three
best-selling novels. Her first novel, The
Heretic’s Daughter, has been published in 15 countries and is a
recipient of the David J. Langum Sr. award for American historical fiction. The
book chronicles the life of Martha Carrier, the author’s grandmother back 9
generations, during the Salem witch trials of 1692, and is based in part on
family stories passed down through generations.
Her second novel, The Traitor’s Wife, explores the
life of Thomas Carrier, husband to Martha; a man who was a soldier during the
English Civil War and who is rumored to be one of the executioners of King
Charles I of England.
The author’s latest novel, The Outcasts, is the recipient
of the American Library Association’s 2014 top choice for Historical Fiction.
Set in Reconstruction Era Texas, the story follows the paths of a young woman
fleeing a life of prostitution and a newly-minted lawman on the hunt for a
killer of men, women and children across the frontier.
A short story titled
"Coincidences Can Kill You" was published in the crime anthology, Dallas Noir, on November 5th,
2013. She is currently working on a novel based on this work.

Daniel J. Hale is an Agatha Award-winning author, a two-time former Executive Vice President of Mystery Writers of America and a creative writing instructor with The Writer’s Path at Southern Methodist University. Together with his nephew, musician Matthew LaBrot, he writes the Zeke Armstrong mystery series for middle-grade readers.
Hale’s short stories have appeared in anthologies such as Dallas Noir (part of Akashic’s Noir Series), The Rich and the Dead (edited by Nelson DeMille) and The Prosecution Rests (edited by Linda Fairstein). He has served as the General Awards Chair for the Edgar® Awards, and he also chaired MWA’s youth literacy program. Hale speaks fluent French and holds degrees from Cornell University, the Bowen School of Law and Southern Methodist University.
A greenhorn forester and recovering mountain biking addict, he spends most of his time in Dallas and the wilds of Arkansas.

9:30am is the time to hear speaker Reavis Z. Wortham.
As a boy, award-winning writer, Reavis Z. Wortham hunted and fished the river bottoms near Chicota, Texas, the inspiration for the fictional setting for The Rock Hole. He was born in Paris, Texas, but lived in Dallas. “We grew up in the city and went to school there, but every Friday evening my parents put us in the car and made the 120-mile drive to Chicota, where we truly lived at my grandparents’ place in the country until Sunday evening, when we came back to the city. Our true home was that little farm in Lamar County.” Reavis graduated from W.W. Samuell High School in Dallas. He attended Eastfield Junior College and graduated with a B.S in Industry and Technology from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M, Commerce). Upon graduation, he began a teaching career in Garland, Texas. He received a Masters in Education from E.T.S.U. and after ten years in the classroom, Reavis took the job as Communications Specialist for the GISD and remained in that department until he retired as Director of Communications in 2011.
He is the author of Doreen’s 24 HR Eat Gas Now Café. Humor editor and frequent contributor for Texas Fish and Game Magazine, he writes on everything from fishing to deer hunting. In addition to several other magazines, his work has appeared in American Cowboy and Texas Sporting Journal. A retired educator of 35 years, he and wife Shana live in Frisco, Texas. They have two daughters, Chelsea and Megan.
Since 1988, Reavis has written a self-syndicated weekly outdoor column for numerous Texas newspapers.
Please turn off cell phones during program and refrain from talking among yourselves while the speaker is talking. Try to keep your questions "general" rather than very specific to your own personal plot -- this will be more helpful to the whole audience.

Meeting Reminder: MWASW-- Charlaine Harris on Saturday, April 5, 2014

After publishing two stand-alone mysteries, Harris launched the lighthearted Aurora Teagarden books with Real Murders, a Best Novel 1990 nomination for the Agatha Awards. Harris wrote eight books in her series about a Georgia librarian. In 1996, she released the first in the much darker Shakespeare mysteries, featuring the amateur sleuth Lily Bard, a karate student who makes her living cleaning houses. Shakespeare’s Counselor, the fifth—and final—Lily Bard novel, was printed in fall 2001.
By then, Harris was feeling the call of new territory. Starting with the premise of a young woman with a disability who wants to try inter-species dating, she created The Sookie Stackhouse urban fantasy series before there was a genre called “urban fantasy.” Telepathic barmaid Sookie Stackhouse works in a bar in the fictional northern Louisiana town of Bon Temps. The first book in the series, Dead Until Dark, won the Anthony Award for Best Paperback Mystery in 2001. Each subsequent book follows Sookie through adventures involving vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures. The series, which ended in 2013, has been released in over thirty languages. True Blood (the HBO TV series based on the books) premiered in September of 2008.
In October 2005, the first of Harris’s new mystery series about a young woman named Harper Connelly debuted with the release of Grave Sight. Harper has the ability to determine the cause of death of any body. After four novels, this series is on hiatus.
Personally, Harris has been married for many years. She is the mother of three wonderful children and the grandmother of two. She lives in central Texas, and when she is not writing her own books, she reads omnivorously. Her house is full of rescue dogs.

Joy Tipping is a writer and editor with more than 20 years experience. She is currently a staff writer, columnist and copy editor for the Guide and Arts & Life sections of The Dallas Morning News. She is also the author of two literary travel guides. Her writing has appeared in every Top 10 paper in the U.S. as well as in dozens of other newspapers and magazines in the U.S. and abroad. As a freelancer, she has worked with national companies such as Lexis-Nexis, Dorling Kindersley and Brown Books, and has edited more than a dozen published books of both fiction and nonfiction. Joy’s honors include the Texas Katie Award for opinion writing, the Texas Medical Association Media Award, and others for writing in the areas of arts/literary criticism, humor, health, city services and juvenile crime. She is a graduate of the University of North Texas. While at Brookhaven College prior to attending North Texas, she was named “Business Student of the Year,” the most unlikely award she has ever received, and her favorite. Meeting--- Dallas MWA next meeting Saturday, Feb 1, 2014
Years ago when I was first starting out and reading mystery reviews in the Dallas Morning News that got details wrong such as saying the killer used a knife instead of the gun in the book as well as reviews that gave away the ending among other problems, I tried to get in there. Now that experience is clearly not an issue, I am told they are eliminating reviewers and cutting coverage. Could be an interesting meeting.
