Review: Tear the City Down: A Novel by Andre Hardy

One last deal and then get out. Coltrane Davis had already been thinking about pulling up stakes and leaving San Diego. That idea gained momentum in Florida recently as his teen daughter competed in a tournament. She did not win. But, she did really well. She has the chance to be somebody great in the tennis world with the right coaching and support. It would also give her a chance to put some physical distance from a tragedy that has haunted them both these past few months and caused incredible grief in their lives.

All he has to do is manage his boss, Saul Sollman, for one more deal. The problem is Saul Sollman is certified nuts. He’s the crooked kingmaker who allowed Coltrane Davis into his world. That decision has financially rewarded them both. Saul is not pleased with Coltrane Davis right now. Getting summoned to Saul’s in the middle of the night, especially on a date night, is the latest reminder that it is time to get out.

Coltrane is also less than pleased. Not only because he was summoned to Saul’s place like he is some sort of indentured servant working for his white king, Dylan Banks also arrived. Coltrane has to work to hide his disgust as Dylan Banks is one of those white guys who appropriates language, culture, and mannerisms not his own when speaking to others outside of his race. Then, when there are consequences, hides behind the wall of privilege.

The agent has a huge problem. His client, Anthony Riddell, an all-pro running back for the Chargers, is in a situation that could cost him everything. Riddell has his own history and it is not good. In the here and now, Riddell is being extorted because of a picture that shows him in a sexually compromising position with another man. Coltrane wants no part of any of it at all and the hard sell by Saul and Dylan begins in earnest.

Dylan is sure that his client was set up. That the whole deal is a plot by the GM to low ball him as they argue about the next contract. The Chargers already declined his fifth-year option, didn’t negotiate a fair market deal, and then put the franchise tag on him. Then stories started getting leaked to the press about health issues, domestic violence, and gang ties.

Being black in the NFL brings issues that white players don’t have to deal with at all. Things between the Chargers and the player are very heated. Now this problem. If word of it, let alone the pictorial proof, go out he could lose his football career, his endorsements, everything.

Coltrane grudgingly agrees to poke around and try to clean up the matter. He soon gets involved deeper than ever intended, as he looks for a way out for the player as well as the people Coltrane loves.

Along the way, readers are treated to a side of San Diego they never see and how race plays a major factor in the NFL and far beyond. It’s a complicated tale, a debut novel, and a good crime fiction read.

That Is The Season

Cowboys lose to the 49ers and end the season. Losing Pollard was huge blow, but the big issues were the usual suspects --penalties, turnovers, and poor clock management.

I fully expect McCarthy to be fired. Jerry has said repeatedly in recent weeks to anyone who would listen and held a microphone that this was the most talented team ever in Cowboys history. It was not. Nowhere close and he has a major responsibility for that as the owner and GM. Since Jerry does nothing wrong and gave McCarthy the best team ever and one that should be in the SuperBowl, all he can do now is fire the man.

Cowboys 2019

The Eagles win today meant they clinched the NFC East regardless of what the Cowboys did today.  Dallas beat the Redskins, which is always a good thing, and finish 8-8.

This was not the season we expected here as Dallas just never did get things going at a consistent rate. I never bought into the Super Bowl hype, but did think they would make a run in the playoffs.

While the news coverage and speculating pundits are sure Jason Garret will be out as Cowboys coach, I am not so sure. I also don't see the point of bringing in another coach unless Jerry is going to step down from his position as GM and constant meddler. That is not going to happen so changing coaches won't mean much.

Cowboys Frustration

Phantom tripping calls, legit penalties that should never happen, bad special teams play, and another inability to get the running game going, kills the Cowboys today. This is another devastating loss. It again reflects far more about the Cowboys than their opponent. NE is not the powerhouse they were and they were there to be beat today. I don't know if JG has to go or not. I don't see another coach better than him available. I also don't know that another coach, unless Jerry gets the hell out of the way, would do any better.

Things You Can Not Unsee

Scott points out that they have not played a real game yet and somebody has already beat the clothes off these Eagles....

The Playoff Run Ends in LA

Seconds ago, the playoff run for the Dallas Cowboys ended in LA as they lost to the Rams 30 to 22. The Rams were a superior team and did what needed to be done to win. Congrats to the Rams.

NFL Fun Fact

In the wake of the news this morning that the Eagles starting QB has been benched for this week due to a back injury, I share this NFL fun fact lifted from Facebook.

SuperBowl Sunday

Like a lot of things these past weeks, today marks another first I hate.....the first SuperBowl without Sandi here. Today is made worse because the team she loved, The New England Patriots, are once again in it. She would have screamed herself hoarse as she cheered for them.

I don't like either team. Quite honestly, if I had my way, neither one would have made it this far. It almost makes the game unwatchable for me. Though, I will be watching as I still love football despite the made up controversy over some players taking a knee and the very real issues regarding injuries, CTE, and concussions. Having had five concussions myself --not caused by organized football-- and having dealt with post concussion syndrome for almost a year after the last one, I know something about what can happen when your brain bounces around in your skull.

So, I will be watching though I am not rooting for anyone. I think the Patriots win going away. I have no faith at all in Foles. And while the Eagles defense is something to fear, Brady is a malicious surgeon and will carve them apart.

I also expect this to be Brady's final game. As I said on FB earlier this week, I think Belchick's celebrations after each post season victory this year and his behavior at Media Day back on Monday indicate a man that knows this is his final SuperBowl appearance. I believe that in a manner of hours to a few days after their win today we will learn that he is retiring effective immediately. That will cause Brady to decide that he is also retiring as he won't want to learn new schemes or deal with a new coach. Those decisions will end the New England Dynasty that began on this date yesterday with NE win at the SuperBowl in 2002.

There you have it....place your bets accordingly as we approach kickoff.

And lift your celebratory drinks to Sandi who I choose to believe is still with us in spirit.

Superbowl

A few thoughts.....going in I thought Carolina would win, but wanted to see Manning close out his career with the win. Congrats to the Broncos on the win. Defense wins championships and in this age of high powered offenses it was nice to see that idea reinforced.

Overall, I thought the game was a let down thanks to all the miscues on both sides. I think the two weeks off really hurt the Panthers as they looked rusty and slow all night. So were Jim Nance and Phil Sims, but that is the way they always are as they racked up more unforced errors than the teams combined. How either one of them has a job amazes me.

I thought the commercials were pretty much blah across the board. I just spent a few minutes on Facebook looking at comments from folks who clearly misunderstood various commercials and are screaming blood murder about what they claim was implied. Not only are they clearly humor impaired, they think some commercials advocated, rape, stalking, bestiality, etc.  It is rather scary knowing those way off base folks are out there.

The other good thing about the Denver win is that there will not be any riots to celebrate the victory. As we all know, stoners don't riot as they are very low energy. They just ask very strange questions and crave food. Non food items are pretty much safe.
