FFB Review: Thorns on Roses by Randy Rawls

I have long been a fan of Randy Rawls work. He hooked me with his Ace Edwards P.I. series that began with Jake’s Burn followed Joseph’s Kidnapping. I could not find reviews of those books so I recently ran again my review of Jade’s Photos which is the third book in that very good series. Right now Randy is out spreading the word of his latest book, Saving Dabba. That new book is the fourth installment of his Beth Bowman series. Today, I want to remind you of another series he has done with my repeat review of the first book, Thorns On Roses. The review below first appeared in this space back on December 30, 2012 in what seems now to have been a lifetime ago.

After you read the repeat review below with the new publishing info, make sure you check out Randy’s guest post from last April on my blog as he discussed his new book, Saving Dabba. You also should read his recent guest post over at PJ Nunn’s Bookbrowsing blog where he discussed how he developed his new book on writing titled Randy’s Boot Camp For Fiction Writers. Finally, make sure you check out the full list of book suggestions today over at Patti’s blog.

You have a lot to read. Good thing it is now officially summer and you have absolutely nothing else to do but pour cool beverages, sip them, and read.

Tom Jeffries has done a lot of things over the years. He used to be a member of Special Forces and still maintains links to his old group. He used to be a Dallas cop. A cop with, according to some, a rather checkered history though nothing was ever proved. These days he is a private investigator in Broward County, Florida.  That means he hands out a lot of business cards with his signature and the slogan--“If I can help, call me.”

The young dead woman in the morgue was found with such a card between her fingers. No doubt a final indignity given by those who raped her and beat her to death.  While the cops have his card, they don’t have her identification or much of anything else. PI Tom Jefferies is in no rush to help them either as he has another way of getting justice.

Mary Lou Smithson was her name and she was in that often difficult time between a young teenager and womanhood. Found in Coral Lakes, the woman was the daughter of old friends Charlie and Lonnie Rogers. Seventeen and sure she knew what she was doing, she was hanging around with a punk boyfriend who sported a certain kind of tattoo. Her parents tried everything to stop her escalating dangerous behavior with no effect. Now, she is in the morgue dead and Tom Jefferies wants answers and justice. That tattoo is going to be a major piece of the puzzle.

What follows is a far more complicated story than your typical vigilante style book. Far different in style and tone from the Ace Atkins series, author Randy Rawls has created a much harder character who isn’t bound by what law enforcement would consider permissible. While there are the occasional inside nods to readers familiar with his other series based in Texas, Tom Jeffries has very little in common with Ace Atkins.

He also has little time for outsiders no matter their intentions as he is on a mission for Mary Lou Smithson. A mission increasingly jeopardized by solid police work, a romantic entanglement, and other issues including the toll the quest is taking on this heavily conflicted character.

Published by L & L Dreamspell, this is the powerful start no doubt of a new series from Randy Rawls. Dark in tone with occasional flashes of humor and romance, the 266 page read takes readers on much more than a vengeance ride. Thorns On Roses is a good one and well worth your time.

FFB Review: Jade’s Photos: Book 3 in the Ace Edwards Series by Randy Rawls

I have long been a fan of Randy Rawls work. He hooked me with his Ace Edwards P.I. series that began with Jake’s Burn followed Joseph’s Kidnapping. I know I read and reviewed both books and yet I cannot find hide nor hair of my reviews for them. I could find my review of the third book in the series which is now titled Jade’s Photos: Book 3 in the Ace Edwards Series (Mysteries in Small Towns in Texas). After you read the repeat review below with the new publishing info, make sure you check out Randy’s guest post from last April on my blog as he discussed his new book, Saving Dabba, the latest in the four book to date Beth Bowman series. You also should read his recent guest post over at PJ Nunn’s Bookbrowsing blog where he discussed how he developed his new book on writing titled Randy’s Boot Camp For Fiction Writers. Finally, make sure you check out the full list of book suggestions today over at Patti’s blog.

For Dallas Private Investigator Arthur Conan Edwards (Ace) three in the morning is usually not a good time. His sleep is frequently interrupted by the ringing of the phone. Usually it is Jake about a case, but occasionally, it is a client in need that Jake has referred. Of course the call will make Ace grumpy, but in the end he will agree to meet the client or Jake somewhere in a few hours.

In this case, it is Johnny Nicholas who calls and he is being blackmailed over an affair he had with a beautiful woman. While his wife might look the other way, his rich and powerful mother-in-law won’t. A mother-in-law who has controlled everything in his life for years and isn’t going to take well seeing pictures of her son-in-law cheating on her daughter.

Before long Ace is in the middle of a blackmail case in Grand Saline, Texas. He has Kit along for backup and assistance in a case that quickly goes nasty with many suspects and several murders. Along the way in a story told primarily from the viewpoints of Ace and Kit, their relationship and his past are used to continue an ongoing secondary storyline regarding Ace’s fallen love.

The result is a story that frequently alludes to earlier books in the series while constantly moving forward in a twisting case on many different paths. Relationships are a theme throughout the book both in terms of dysfunctional love and the choices one makes in loving others. This interesting twisting tale further develops Ace’s character along with Kit’s while providing plenty of mystery, action and a bit of Texas folklore and culture to keep readers highly entertained. Once again Randy Rawls has another strong novel in his series worth reading.

Guest Post: Randy Rawls and Saving Dabba

Please welcome back Randy Rawls to the blog today as he discusses his new book, Saving Dabba.

SAVING DABBA

Beth Bowman is not a late sleeper, but it doesn’t bother her if the sun beats her up. Certainly, five AM is too early for her to be stirring unless on a case. This time, though, it’s the Chief of Police asking her to come into the station. If you’re a PI in Coral Lakes, FL, you want to maintain good relations with the police, especially the chief. So, Beth drags herself out of bed, preps for the day and heads for a meeting on an unknown subject.

The news is not good. A man was found dead in the park, beaten to death. He carried no identification, but has the looks of a homeless person. Since Beth is friends with several of the homeless in the area, the chief is hopeful she’ll recognize him. She does. The dead man has a tattoo of the outline of the state of Texas on his neck. A star in the tattoo in the approximate location of Dallas gave him his street name—Dallas. But that’s about all Beth knows about him. He hasn’t been in the area very long.

The chief has nothing except a gut feeling to go on, and that points him toward a new group that has come to Coral Lakes—Friends Intent on The Environment, or FITE. He asks Beth not to get involved, to let the police handle this one.

Beth is noncommittal, knowing full-well she will warn her friends to sleep indoors and be more careful. A second body turns up, a copy of what happened to Dallas. Then, a young man is found shot to death in the park. Dabba, a member of Beth’s group, is arrested for the murder.

Beth will not believe Dabba to be guilty and sets herself on a path to track down the people who are turning Coral Lakes into a social battlefield.

The young man who was killed was a member of Friends Intent on The Environment. The demonstrations intensify as the leader of FITE demands that Dabba be turned over to them for justice. That leader, Cloie Morales, is expert at manipulating a crowd, and the Coral Lakes downtown is soon a burning scene reminiscent of war between the police and those supporting FITE.

SAVING DABBA is book 4 in the Beth Bowman series. A transplanted Texan, she is a PI in Coral Lakes, FL. In book 1, HOT ROCKS, Beth is befriended by a group of homeless. They accept her and become her allies in resolving the cases she takes on. Each of them has a tragic story, which comes out during the course of the books.

Book 5, which is in progress, takes Beth into the world of illegal immigration and those who exploit immigrants. It’s a look at another social and political problem in our society.

Thanks, Kevin, for letting me discuss my work.

Another Book In My TBR Pile

Randy Rawls and his book BEST DEFENSE reviewed here.

Man....I hope someday things get better enough around here that I can get back to focusing on reading, reviews, and my own writing.  Even when I was working Special Education full time for the school district and taking care of things at home while Sandi went to night school at TWU for her education degree, I got way more done than what I can do now. I spent much of today looking for things to fight for insurance benefits for Sandi after yet another problem came to light. So many trees have died to support my efforts to get her what should just happen automatically.

As sick as I am at least I can still do this for her. I shudder to think what happens to folks who have no one screaming bloody murder on their behalf. The system seems designed to fight the terminal patient over every damn little thing and I am so freaking sick of it.

So concludes tonight's sermon of frustration. Go read the review.

Meet Randy Rawls

I had the privilege several years ago back when the mystery conference Hardboiled Heroes and Cozy Cats was around. Randy Rawls is one very cool dude and one heck of a writer. The below message appeared on one of my lists and I am taking the liberty of pasting it here....

Randy Rawls Signs Hot Rocks:

Randy Rawls is a son of the south with two main hobbies: reading and writing mysteries or thrillers. When he's not at the computer, fleshing out the next story, he's curled up with a good book, many of them by South Florida writers. He's read many hundreds and had eight published. Randy Rawls lives in South Florida. Come to Murder on the Beach to meet and hear Randy Rawls.  Free refreshments!

FFB Review: "Jasmine's Fate" by Randy Rawls

In the interest of fair disclosure, I first met Randy Rawls at the Hardboiled Heroes and Cats convention a few years back. A neat guy was my initial assessment and that hasn’t changed since. Jasmine’s Fate a book well worth your attention as is the entire series. For more books worth your attention check out the list over at Patti Abbott’s blog….

Dallas, home of the fictional Lee Henry Oswald series written by Harry Hunsicker, is also home to the fictional Arthur Conan Edwards, Ace to his friends and his writer friend, Randy Rawls.  Stylistically opposite in extremes, both are always open to helping damsels in distress. Especially if it is a redhead as Ace has a weakness for redheads.  Summoned by his good friend Clint Ravel, lead detective on a homicide case, Ace leaves his two cats, Sweeper and Striker, home alone to tear up the place while he drives over to meet his latest potential client, Jasmine Loverly.

Ace is divorced, drives a convertible Chrysler Sebring, has a good friend and neighbor, Mr. Harbinger (who keeps an eye out for him), knows a very good lawyer by the name of Candi Maladay, and the fore mentioned two cats and weakness for redheads.  Jasmine Loverly is definitely a redhead and definitely beautiful.  She is also definitely, a suspect in the murder of Doug Isendorf, III.  He died from a kitchen knife being shoved deep into his chest and the beautiful Jasmine, who cries almost continuously, has his blood on her hands. His father is convinced she did it and wants her buried under the jail. When she isn't crying, she's gorgeous and before long, Ace is trying to clear her name while following a trail that leads from Dallas/ Ft. Worth to East Texas and back again.

Released through Hilliard and Harris, this latest novel in the series was a first for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Having met and talked with Randy Rawls at the recent HHCC convention in Dallas, I found his book to read just like Randy talks.  It’s a cozy style novel told from Ace's viewpoint with a cast of solid recurring characters and an intriguing mystery.  Much like Randy, the work carries a quiet confidence that everything will turn out in the end.  The result is a comfortable page turning read where the bad guys get theirs in the end, Ace has his girl and his cats, and all is right with the world.  Pop a Killian, Ace's drink of choice, and sit back and enjoy.

Reviewing: "Death by Diamonds: A Beth Bowman Mystery" by Randy Rawls

Known for his engaging and very good Arthur Conan Edwards (Ace) mystery series, author Randy Rawls is going in a new direction with Death by Diamonds: A Beth Bowman Mystery. Set in South Florida and featuring a tough female private investigator, this character and series is nothing like Ace. Everything about her and what she will do is different---not just her gender.

Beth Bowman is on a rather routine assignment in South Florida working surveillance on a cheating husband. Mr. Garcia is a cheater, according to his wife, who has paid private investigator Beth Bowman good money for proof of his indiscretions. After tailing him by car, Beth follows him on foot right into an elevator located in an upscale high rise hotel. Upon arriving on his floor, she holds the doors open and watches while he walks down the hall and knocks on a room door.

Let into the room with Bowman slowly following from down the hall, it quickly becomes clear this is not a romantic tryst for Mr. Garcia. Instead, there is some sort of altercation going on and Beth walks straight into an ambush and is left unconscious.

When the cobwebs clear, it is obvious that Mr. Garcia is dead and Bowman has been framed for murder. While the local police in the form of Detective Bannon and Detective Sargent seem predisposed to believe she killed the philandering husband, Bowman knows she didn't. She also knows that she has to find who did and why and deliver a bit of karmic payback to the ones that tried to frame her. All Bowman has is her reputation and once that is lost, her career is over as a private investigator. In a complex case that twists and turns, P. I. Bowman gets a lot of help from old friends and unexpected allies.

This first book in a planned new series is another good one from author Randy Rawls. Filled with plenty of action and mystery as well as some romance, this is a read told primarily from the pov of Beth Bowman that delivers in all aspects. While there are similarities that immediately come to mind regarding a Stephanie Plum type character, Bowman is not going to forget to take her gun with her to meet somebody at two in the morning at an abandoned warehouse. She also is not going to dither between men, talk nasty, or do any of a number of other things that are supposed to be cute– and quickly grow annoying for the reader. Beth Bowman is a smart and capable private investigator who just happens to be a woman.

Sure she does make mistakes at times and when she does they are believable real world mistakes. Her mother is constantly in her business and that drives her nuts. She does have self-doubt and the romance that has begun as a secondary storyline to the case does give her some concern. Instead of being an idiot or superwoman, she is believably real and human in all aspects.

As are all the other characters in this fast paced novel that features plenty of action, mystery and the beginnings of a romance. The book is a solid foundation to what should be a good series from the mind of author Randy Rawls. While longtime fans may be disappointed it is not an Ace novel, they can take solace in the fact that Beth Bowman rocks.
