Skin Health Update

While a lot of things are getting worse, according to the skin cancer doc, things look better. I have over a dozen places from head to toe she and other folks have been keeping an eye on to see if they would go bad. She did the full body check yesterday and said all was good. In fact, not only was there nothing new, the places of concern looked way better.

And I got out of there without even having to do a copay as they said they would fight it out with insurance. I think their billing person took pity on me as by the time I got to her, I was in tremendous pain and exhausted. She asked twice if I was okay to drive home. I assured her I was and then sat in the car with the ac on and the engine running for ten minutes asking myself the same question.

I, and the car, made the 45 minute drive home in one piece.

So, I am relieved. Also, more than a bit surprised that everything was okay. It will be eight years on 12/1 since Sandi passed. I never expected to make it more than a couple of years. I saw a lot of folks lose their fight when Sandi was going through her hell. I also saw many surviving spouses soon get diagnosed with cancer after their loved one died.  Most did not survive their own battle. I always figured that situation was inevitable for me.

That has not happened, apparently, to this point. The skin over this human meat sack of aging spare parts seems to be okay.

Six Years Later

This has been a very tough day...... six years ago today Sandi came home her final time just after six in the evening. It was the beginning of hospice ... and the beginning of the end. I did not want her here as I was very afraid of what was coming and not being able to care for her as she needed and deserved. That turned out to be the reality as after about a week they lost pain control and she suffered horribly before lapsing into unconsciousness those last few days. It was hell for her and for us too.

Sandi, on the other hand, did not want to die in the hospital. She desperately wanted to be at home here with us. I agreed as that was what she wanted and there was no way I could tell her no. In a sense she is still here as her urn sits here in the den.

I wish for so much that can't be......and I miss her so much. Every day is hard....some are worse than others....and then there are days like today. I turn 62 Monday and she is not here to tell me not to be grumpy about another birthday and to have fun.

Then we have Thanksgiving, Christmas, and her birthday in January. What should be a great time of year is instead a hard, painful slog. Six years later, nothing has changed. At least she is not here to watch me slowly get sicker as what little I inherited vanishes like sand through the hourglass.

George Weir

Just learned that mystery author and cyber friend George Weir has passed. Damn cancer. Had no idea he was sick. He never said a word. Just devastated.

After Sandi passed, he made a point to reach out every now and then and check on me to make sure I was not having any stupid thoughts. I was. He got my head back on a little less crooked on more than one occasion. Not only am I going to miss the hell out of his books he had planned, I am going to miss the hell out of him as the person he was.

One Year Later

It was precisely at 8:45 AM one year ago today when Sandi's long fight ended and she was finally free of the pain and suffering she had gone through. People keep telling me going on  gets easier. It hasn't. This past year has been hell and it isn't getting any easier.

Espcially today.

Sandi back in 2012 when she was in remission and we had hope. She always had hope. Her body failed her....never her spirit.

Thanksgiving Day 2018

Thanksgiving these days has never been the same since 2011. It was back then, after a couple of weeks in the hospital with a collapsed lung and a ton of fluid withdrawals later, Sandi and I would learn she had cancer. It was on Thansgiving Day at around 2:30 in the afternoon when nine doctors and several nurses gathered around Sandi's bed at Baylor Plano to tell us she had two forms of Non Hodgkins Cancer. It was very bad and they were sure that she could beat it.

It was only later when the stem cell transplant failed and they moved her to terminal staus while moving her case to Medical City Dallas Hospital we knew that someday in the not so distant future it would all be over. Sandi made six Thanksgivings which was far longer than anyone expected after the stem cell transplant failed so quickly.

Anyway, Thanksgiving has never been the same and it really was different this year. It was our first one without her and happened just two days after my birthday. A day that passed without Sandi being in my life since the fall of 1980 when I met her all those years ago at Richland Junior College. I am 57 now with a widower withalmost one year under my belt and I am still as devestated and destroyed as I was when she passed on December 1st.

People keep telling me it will get better. It isn't. If anything, it is getting worse.

Today has been very difficult, but Scott and I focused on football and doing various things around here. Sandi always did a turkey with my job being to lift the bird where it needed to go as it moved from fridge to sink to oven and back out again. So, since I don't have a clue how to cook that, we had a ham which I cooked yesterday evening. Pumpkin pie awaits us later this evening for a late night dessert.

It has been a quiet Thanksgiving around here. We miss her, it massively hurts, and yet everything and everyone else goes right on doing whatever like nothing happened. We tried to do something different...to start something new as she would have wnted....but, I don't know that it took.

A Very Tough Day

This has been a very tough day......a year ago today Sandi came home her final time just after six in the evening.

She desperately wanted to be at home in the quiet here with us. I agreed as that was what she wanted and tehre was no way I could tell her no. In a sense she is still here as her ashes sit in her urn on the bedroom bureau in my room. At some point I will join her and the boys can decide what to do with us.

In the meantime, we grind closer to Thanksgiving. A day we spent more often than not in the hospital since she was first diagnosed on Thanksgiving Day 2011. I still remeber the doctors and how they made a ring around her bed and then slowly broke the news. In a few minutes our future toegther exploded and fragmented in a thousand different ways. I don't rember much about what they said, but I do remeber her swearing that she was not done and that she would beat it. She did everything she could to do so. Sandi fought and made it a lot longer than anyone had ever though possible since that day she was diagnosed. She beat the odds again and again and made it for six years.

I wish she had made a seventh. I wish for so much that can't be......and I miss her so much. Every day is hard....some are worse than others....and then there are days like today when it is so incredibly soul crushingly brutal. It built on last night when I sat in Green Hall at UTD and thought about how often Sandi, pregnant with Scott, sat there waiting for me back in that final semester of 93 and how proud she would be of him now and everything. Before I knew it, I had started crying in front of a dozen or so 20 somethings who had no idea what to do with the blubbering fat man. Today I have managed to keep from crying in public today as we ran errands. But, the water works have poured out here at home several times including as I try to write this post.

How I am going to get through the next two weeks, let alone another Christmas and all, I have no idea. Somehow, I will. But, as I said on Facebook the other day, if I could take a pill and sleep through the next three months and skip all of it, I would. I would swallow that pill in a heartbeat and the side effects be damned.

Reality hurts like hell. Again.....
