Scott's Take: Hallow Point: A Mick Oberon Job by Ari Marmell

Hallow Point: A Mick Oberon Job by Ari Marmell is the second book in the series that began with Hot Lead, Cold Iron. It is the 1930s and the Spear of Lugh is in Chicago. The weapon is magical and has the ability to make whoever carries it into battle undefeatable. The Mob, The Wild Hunt, and The Courts all wish to find the spear first and use its power to change the world.  PI Mick Oberon does not want to be involved in the hunt for the weapon, but soon is and in the middle between various factions that are fighting it out as they search.

There is a stronger horror element at work in this book as various disturbing Fae creatures are introduced in this read. For example, there are these things known as Redcaps. These creatures murder humans and dip their hats in fresh human blood to turn their hats red. The redder the hat, the more recent the kill. Redcaps live to kill everything, especially humans. There are some other disturbing creatures from Irish/Scottish Mythology that might make some readers a bit squeamish. For example, the headless horseman is based on the legend of the Dulllahan n the Irish/Scottish myth where a man looking creature carries its own head in basket and rides a black horse called Dullahan.

Hallow Point: A Mick Oberon Job by Ari Marmell is a darker read that continues this noir magical fantasy series and yet is still very much like the first one. If you enjoyed the first one, you would probably enjoy this one as well as it continues the idea of classic noir with the added twist of magic. This series should be read in order since there are small references to the first book. It is also very clear, based on the ending, that this book is clearly setting up the rest of the series. The third book in the series, Dead to Rites: A Mick Oberon Job, is in by TBR pile from the library.
