John McMahon and his offer: YOUR NAME in my NEXT BOOK

Readers of this blog know that I am a big fan of John McMahon and his books. If things were not so grim here, I would do this in a heartbeat. As I can't, I asked Mr. McMahon if I could share the news here on my blog to help raise visibility of this very cool opportunity. He enthusiastically gave his support so the relevant part of his  latest newsletter, THE OFFER, is below.  Do it and help some folks and get the opportunity to be in the next book. And, if you have not read his books, get yourself to your favorite bookstore, library, or book selling portal. He writes great stuff!  His author website is here

YOUR NAME IN MY NEXT BOOK
Hi Friends,

This newsletter – I come to you with an offer.

•    Would you like to see – YOUR NAME – as a character in my next book?
•    You could live on in immortality in print (and digital).

I was challenged to help raise money for some good causes.

•    Maybe your name is a judge killed under mysterious circumstances?
•    Or you’re the Director of the NSA?

Not sure if there will be a demand for this or not – but trying something new.

4 GREAT CAUSES & GROUND RULES
I have four charities that I have some connection to/passion for – and I’m looking to help them build donations.

So – ground rules:

1)    Donate $250 to one of four charities. I will match donations with my own $250. So together, we could raise $500 x 4 causes = $2,000.

2)    You get your name as a character in my next Gardner Camden/Patterns and Recognition book (coming out next Summer).

And if you already support good causes – you could just shift your focus this year – and support one of these.

OK. Here are 4 great causes we would together support:

charity: water – building wells; ending the water crisis in the world; 100% of our donation goes directly to fund clean water projects. No admin cost.

St. Jude Hospital – amazing pediatric research hospital, focusing on children with cancer and leukemia.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance – non-profit parent company of the San Diego Zoo; their mission is simple- to save species worldwide.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – supporting research to find a cure for CF and improve the lives of those living with it.

FINE PRINT
1)    You write the check to the charity - but get it to me. I’m going to deliver the checks, but it’s your tax deduction. And no past donations count.

2)    I will make you sign an agreement about your name in the book so you don't sue anyone. Don’t worry. I will not make you a child predator. (I save that for critics of my books (Kidding :))

IF YOU’RE INTERESTED  – respond to this email – mcmahonjohn@att.net

Things Are Desperate Around Here

Things are very brutal money wise. Not just with the groceries, gasoline, and more  that is hitting all of us. Scott has not worked in over two weeks as there has not been work for him. So, no work means no paycheck and no income.

So, if you like what we do at Kevin's Corner, please consider making a donation through the PayPal widget on the left side of the blog. We could really use the help.

Please and thank you.

Things Are Not Good

As we all know, the cost of living is going up each week. I am rapidly running out of what little I inherited as a dollar just does not stretch much at all. Scott is actively looking for a job and not having any luck whatsoever. He can't even get an interview. He has also noticed that places like LinkedIn, Indeed, etc., have far fewer listings now than a month ago. Which ties into the hiring signs no longer in store front windows around us here in NE Dallas. Companies are definitely pulling back as things evolve.

So, if you know of something job related, please pass it on. He has a Masters in Criminology, and is looking primarily for some sort of customer service oriented job. Though, he is pretty much open to anything and everything. He just wants to work.

After Sandi passed, I never thought I would still be here now. I figured I had a year or two, tops, between the grief and my own health and that would be it. I fully expected my own cancer diagnosis, as not only does cancer run hard in my family, but I saw many spouses go through the death of their loved one only to fight their own terminal cancer diagnosis. So, I fully expected to be dead long before facing the possibility of being homeless.

Surprise!

Seven plus years later, I'm not there yet, but I can see it from my porch. So, if you want to help out, and can afford to do so, please use the PayPal widget over on the left side of the blog.

Any amount truly helps.

Thank you.

YouCaring: Memorial for Dave Nunn Jr (Son of PJ Nunn)

Many of you know PJ Nunn, owner of Breakthrough Promotions. Her son, David, tragically passed away on Friday after a long battle against many medical issues. Now, along with their grief, the family is faced with medical bills and funeral costs. If you can help, please do so. Also, please take a moment and share this post so that others are aware and can help if they are able to do so.

From the YouCaring donation page.....

Most of you know David Nunn Jr has been fighting serious medical issues that began in 2011 with a bad staph infection that cost him his right leg and caused his lungs to fail. He's been a fighter, persistently overcoming obstacles and surprising his doctors. But this week he faced his final battle and breathed his last breath Friday afternoon,  November 11th. Unfortunately, due to his age and the chronic medical issues,  he didn't have life insurance and his family is now faced with enormous funeral costs and outstanding medical bills.  We would really appreciate any donations to help them cover these expenses. The funeral is Friday, November 18th and funeral costs must be paid by noon on Thursday. Thank you,  in advance for any help and support.

We Desperately Need Your Help!

Desperate times here as we are way past due on everything including the phone bill and the power bill. There are prescriptions that urgently need to be refilled. We have to pay our renters insurance (failure to do so gets one evicted immediately) and pay our car insurance.

In short, we are in a world of trouble. Our rent is due on the 1st and we will be paying late again on the third and using everything in our Social Security Disability payments and a little more in the bank to cover that. But, we have no way to pay the other bills due.

If you can help and want to please consider making a donation over at the PayPal widget over on the left side of the blog.  I hate begging for your help, but we really truly need it. Anything helps.... if you can.

Guest Post: Jeanne on Library Donations in Memoriam

Jeanne of the Bookblog of the Bristol Public Library is back today with a deeply personal post on the subject of donating books to the library…

When I was growing up, one of the only acceptable ways of paying respects to the dead was to send flowers to the funeral. One also sent food to the living, attended the wake, and of course the funeral.  The standard time between death and the funeral was at least three days, to give enough time to notify relatives and friends, and for them to have the chance to travel to the funeral.

Things have changed quite a bit in the past few decades.  For one thing, the wake—also known as “sitting up with the dead” in my region, a reflection of when such things were held in the family parlor—is now largely visitation (“The family will receive friends..”) and since a jumble of relatives don’t usually descend for the week, folks have cut down on the food offerings a bit.  Some funerals have taken place within a day of passing or else been held up for weeks as a memorial service has taken the place of a traditional funeral with a body in a casket.  Death notices in the newspaper have become less of a given, now that many papers charge for such notices.

Another change is the floral tribute which, I am sure, has been very difficult for the florists.  Instead of automatically accepting flowers, many notices carry a list of suitable places to make donations in honor of the deceased.   I have to say that is a change I applaud; while I always appreciated seeing the flowers, knowing that one can help defray funeral expenses for the family or contribute to a charity near and dear to the person seems a much more useful way to express one’s sympathy.

For me, that has become donating a book to the library in memory of the person.  In fact, twice a year I make a donation to the library back in our home town in honor of my mother, a voracious reader who would have loved having a library at her disposal.  When she was growing up, there was no county library; when I was growing up, there was a library at the county seat but not in our town. My mother was on the Regional Library Board and advocated for a library for our town. We did finally get one just about four years before we moved away.  It was in the town hall, above the jail, in a room not exactly designed to held thousands of pounds of weight.  The floor bowed in several places. One always had the feeling one could go in for a book and end up in a cell.

The library now has a new home on a ground floor and has room for more books, though not the budget. With my donation, I allow the library to do the selection based on the current needs of their readers.  After all, there’s little reason to select a book that will just gather dust on the shelves.  I do give some broad guidelines.  For example, my mother had a love of history and genealogy, so books about our region are good choices. She also loved mysteries and historical sagas, so things in that genre—especially large print, as that was her salvation when she developed macular degeneration—are excellent choices.  When the books are selected, a plate goes inside with her name on it.  I like to think that some reader picks the book up and takes a moment to be grateful that Negetha G. Powers is remembered in that way.

I know that’s my reaction with the collection here.  There are any number of books with memorial plates or “In honor of” plates.  If it’s a subject I especially enjoy, I feel a bit of kinship to the person named.   A few years back, we lost a wonderful patron who was a devoted knitter, especially of socks.  With the donations we bought a number of knitting books, adding greatly to the collection.  Not long after a patron came up, looking a bit puzzled.  She too is an avid knitter and had been through most of the books in our collection.  She pointed to the plate and said, “What does this mean?” I explained, and her face lit up.  “Ah, what a nice lady!” she said.

So this is my pitch for the day. It comes about as we have lost a long time staff member, one who was also an omnivorous reader.  My choices for her were easy:  I just chose the books she had put on reserve but which were not yet published at the time she passed. I know she was itching to read the next Mike Lawson and Lee Child.

At a time when books, authors, and libraries are feeling the pinch, when many readers have had financial setbacks and are living on limited incomes, giving a book to a library pays it forward in so many ways.

The views expressed herein are my own and not those of other person or instititution.

A Message from Author Kaye George

There's a great little book store in the suburbs of Austin that's in trouble. I NEVER do this like this, but I'm doing it now. They've started a GoFundMe drive to try to keep their doors open. The Book Spot in Round Rock has been a great friend to local authors for many years. I can even keep this topical, because they hosted me and two other writers who had done a short story anthology a few years ago. If you can, and if you want to see small, friendly, local bookstores stay in business, here's a link to help out:

(If this is against the rules, I suppose no one will see this and I apologize for feeling strongly about this.)

We Need Help

Pure and simple--we need help. After doing the taxes which is depressing and frustrating as all get out, I looked at the money situation and that is worse. We are past due on the phone and power bills. Sandi and I both need medication refills. There are other issues. So, we are in a big time bind.

If you can donate via the PayPal widget here on the blog that would be great and hugely appreciated.

Update on Flat Out Begging For Your Help

Back on Wednesday I begged for your help. Because of your help I have been able to buy some medications  and get food. I rescheduled my visit with the cardiologist as they insist on my paying my Medicare deductible up front at time of visit. That was not happening. Still working on trying to paying the phone and power bills as well as getting the rest of this month’s meds. So, things are not quite the absolute complete disaster they were on Wednesday.

We still do need your help if at all possible.  Please donate--if you can--buy using the paypal widget to the left.

Thank you!

Lap Quilts and More Via Sandi

I am often told that we should consider applying for food stamps and Medicaid. We do and have though it is a complete waste of time. Because of Texas rules on food stamps and Medicaid, they only look at your income. Social Security Disability is counted as income and our combined SSD of just over $1500 means that we exceed the limit by $15.00. Texas does NOT take into consideration that our rent is $1500, over what we spend in medicines each month for her (let alone the rest of us), power bill, etc. What Sandi gets from sales of her crafts, and what we receive in donations from wonderful people, is how we are surviving here. That's it.

In recent days Sandi has been strong enough to finish a couple of things and now has them ready for sale. Funds raised from selling these things goes to putting food on the table, medicines, etc. so please know that buying something helps us lot.

Please ignore the date/time stamp on the first few pictures as something went haywire with her old camera.

As you see to the right and below, first up is her latest lap quilt which measures 44x43 inches. The interior consists of four squares of various colors with an outer border of yellow. Asking price is $50 which includes the usual $9.00 non priority shipping by way of the post office. (If you prefer UPS shipping that can be easily done though we do not know what that would cost.)

Also she has finished this walker caddy. A walker caddy attaches to the walker by way of the top loops making it possible for the user to bring along with him or her, a book, television remote, eyeglasses, etc., while leaving the hands free to hold on to the walker.

These go for $10 and that includes the usual $4.00 non priority shipping.

While those are her latest efforts she still has a number of items available that were mentioned here at the end of January. The price listed includes the same non priority shipping by way of the post office. They include....

$45  35x42 with Maroon border

$45  32x46 Double Blue

$50   44x44 Green with Maroon border

And this walker caddy in her "winter colors" and sells for $10

Of course, she has plenty of  other items over at her iOffer store, but there are far too many to list here.

Hopefully you see something you like in these. If you have any questions, please ask in the comment section here or drop me a note at kevinrtipple AT Verizon.net  And, if you don’t want to make a purchase, but would like to make a donation please use the PayPal widget to your left. Anything and everything helps and is very much appreciated.

Please share this post with your friends and family who might be looking for personal handmade gifts. Thank you!

Sandi’s Latest Projects

While her store is still up at iOffer Sandi is far too sick right now to put her recent items up for sale there. All of these were completed before she took her latest turn for the worst the day after her birthday on the 19th. Since she is so sick right now she asked me to mention them on here and see if there was any interest. Quantities are limited and are being sold on a first come first sold basis.

First up on the showcase (waves one arm to gesture at the below item) we have a maroon lap quilt. This small one measures 35x42 features six internal squares surrounded by a maroon border. It is being sold for $45 (includes $8.00 non-priority shipping by way of the post office).

Next up we have a slightly smaller lap quilt in light blue. This one measures 29x42. It features the same six square pattern Sandi uses in these along with a light blue border.  It is being sold for $45 (includes $8.00 non-priority shipping by way of the post office).

If you like the light blue border, but want more blue in the lap quilt this one might work for you.  Sandi refers to this one as her “double blue” lap quilt. It measures 32 x 46 making it slightly larger than the preceding ones. It features six squares internally in the lap quilt surrounded by the light blue border. It is being sold for $45 (includes $8.00 non-priority shipping by way of the post office).

Maybe you want to go bigger than that? Sandi has a couple that just might work for you. First up is this one that measures 43 x56. It features the usual six squares and border. In this case the dominant color is brown and used in the center of the squares as well as the border along with an off white.  Due to the larger size it is being sold for $50 (includes $9.00 non-priority shipping by way of the post office).

SOLD!

She also has available this one that features green with a double maroon border. It measures 44 x 44 and contains the normal six squares. It is $50 (includes $9 non-priority shipping by way of the post office).
Sandi also has some walker caddies available. Like her chemo hats, these are a huge hit in the doctor’s office when she donates them as one can put a book, reading glasses, cell phone, etc. in the small pockets of the caddy. The loops at the top of the caddy go over a bar in the walker and are held closed by a button.  They sell for $10 and that includes the same basic shipping at $4.00 by way of  the post office.  She has them currently available in purple and “winter colors.”
SOLD!!!

Hopefully you see something you like in these. If you have any questions, please ask in the comment section below or drop me a note at kevinrtipple AT Verizon.net  And, if you don’t want to make a purchase, but would like to make a donation please use the PayPal widget to your left. Anything and everything helps and is very much appreciated.
