My Short Story Reading at Noir At The Bar: Dallas

Last Sunday evening I read my short story, Package of Pain, at Noir At The Bar: Dallas at The Wild Detectives. Those that were there and heard it seemed to have really liked it. It was originally written around thirty years ago.  I never could get any market to pick it up so it eventually wound up in my short story collection, Mind Slices.

It is again going to see the light of day as it will appear in the anthology, Crimeucopia: Say it Again. The anthology of reprints is due out in January. If you can’t wait, please go buy Mind Slices at Amazon or Smashwords.

Smashwords Read An Ebook Week Sale

Again this year, Smashwords celebrates with the Read An Ebook Week sale. During the sale period of March 7-13, 2021, my short story collection, Mind Slices: A Collection of New and Previously Published Stories, will be $1.49 instead of the normal $2.99. Like me, it is pretty weird. For the most part, the reviews have been positive except for a couple of folks that prove the old adage that not every  reader can understand what they are reading.

My short story collection is at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/243655

Hope you take advantage of the opportunity.

THE FINAL HOURS of the Smashwords End of Year Sale

These are the final hours of the Smashwords End of Year Sale. 2017 has been a very bad year in so many ways. Go pick up a book and make the real world go away for a little while.

Weighted down by holding his Derringer Award in one hand while he held his dog, Duncan, in the crook of his other arm and hand and thus was only able to type with his nose, Barry Ergang  put his books at a reduced price. This includes his whodunit/howdunit “The Play of Light and Shadow” which, surprisingly, is not about being strapped on a concrete floor in an abandoned Texas warehouse while the August sun comes through the grimy windows and sombrero wearing rats observe by way of lounging around on several wooden pallets.  You can find his books at Smashwords.

For those who always said I was brainless I used an image from one of my several MRIs back in 2010 for the cover of my short story collection.  Mind Slices: A Collection of New and Previously Published Stories.  Most folks who have read it and seem to have a brain have liked it though one person who didn’t was apparently so devastated by the experience he never reviewed another book on Amazon. You can do better!  The book is available for FREE during the Smashwords' year-end sale from December 25th to January 1st. If you choose to pick it up and read it, please review it as you see fit.

The Latest Review For Mind Slices

I saw this review pop up over on Goodreads a couple of weeks back. With everything going on here I forgot to mention it. This review by Angela made my day. It states here:

"I finished out International Short Story Month in May with this eerie collection of short stories by Kevin Tipple. With their mix of mystery, horror, and a bit of sci-fi thrown in, I never knew what I might get, but was always in for a treat. The stories' suspenseful atmospheres and intriguing twists kept the pages turning. Highly enjoyable and recommended."

Pretty freaking cool!

You can pick up your eBook copy for $2.99 at Smashwords, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc. While there make sure you pick up a copy of that anthology I am also in, Carpathian Shadows Volume 2 that includes my mystery tale, "By The Light Of The Moon..."

My Books

I hate plugging my own stuff. Still, every now and then it has to be done.

Mind Slices: A Collection of New and Previously Published Stories—16 stories in fantasy, science fiction, mystery, suspense, and mainstream fiction, with some stories blending genres. The book includes “Burning Questions” which was a honorable mention winner in Mysterical-E’s “Skeletons in the Closet” contest in the fall of 2007 as well as several pieces that were published at the mystery e-zine “Mouth Full Of Bullets.” In total, the book contains 16 stories in a variety of genres for $2.99.

The book is available at Amazon, Smashwords, and Barnes and Noble  The read currently is only available in e-book form.

If 16 stories all written by yours truly sounds daunting take a look at Carpathian Shadows: Volume II. The anthology contains six stories based on a simple premise.

Deep in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains, in Transylvania, lies an castle once home to a nobleman who warred with the church, bound his servants with a curse of silence, and ruled his lands with a grip of iron. Lord John Erdely has been dead for centuries and his castle now a haven for tourists. Or so, at least, is the claim. Under the editorial direction of Lea Schizas, six authors tell what happens to these tourists.

My story titled “By The Light Of The Moon...” is a mystery with a couple of fantasy elements.

Published by Books For A Buck where it is available, it can also be obtained in print as well as e-book forms at Amazon, Smashwords, and Barnes and Noble. I also have a few print copies on sale for ten dollars which includes postage.

BSP Sample Sunday: "BURNING QUESTIONS" in "Mind Slices" collection

A lot of my stuff crosses genres. I never set out to do that and certainly didn't in this case. I just had this idea that was part science fiction --- at least it still is right now --- and part mystery. This piece was to appear in a couple of different anthologies that never got going as a reprint after it won an "Honorable Mention" in Mysterical-E’s “Skeletons in the Closet” contest in the fall of 2007. That led to it being published online at the site in the summer of 2008.

I am still very proud of that win. I thought today I would give you a small sample of the story and hope that it will entice you to buy the book.

BURNING QUESTIONS

“So, what do you think, Marcus?”

Detective Marcus Freeman shot his cuffs for the fourth time in five minutes and fellow Detective Steve Washburn knew it was just a matter of time before he could make another mark on his pad. In the last hour Freeman had shot his cuffs nineteen times. Some might see such activities as a reflection that the clothes did not fit the man. Steve knew that it was just another sign of Freeman’s nauseating vanity. Unlike the Vampire legend, Freeman was able to check his image in every reflective surface.

“It’s a slam dunk,” Freeman said confidently.

Steve didn’t think much of the comment or his complex analysis of the case.  Actually, Steve didn’t think much of Marcus Freeman at all and just barely tolerated the sycophant. But, with the new Division Commander sitting there grading everything as his beady little eyes watched them both above his hawkish nose, Steve had to ask. Playing politics wasn’t his thing and Steve hated every second of it. Freeman should have been in sales because all he cared about was his personal image and what he could do by hook or crook to get ahead.

Detectives were supposed to speak for the dead and Detective Marcus Freeman couldn’t be bothered. The dead and their families weren’t people to him but just numbers and stats he used to justify his naked ambition. He wasn’t a real detective in the true sense of the concept but more like a celluloid Hollywood image of a snappy cop leading some task force. He didn’t look the real life part with his expensive clothes, his silver Porsche, and gold Rolex watch. Steve found himself doodling dollar signs in a cross-hair target and stopped himself as he shifted in his uncomfortable institutional chair trying to pay attention. He wanted to-- he needed to--be out working cases. Instead he was wasting his time in meetings.

“It’s a slam dunk. Open and shut case without a doubt and we can take it off the books today in favor of the good guys.” Freeman touched his lapel pin and went on, his confident voice grating on Steve’s already raw nerves. “We know he did it and he is going to the injection chamber. Six, seven months if they don’t fill the backorder fast enough and he is done.”

“Maybe.”

Steve hadn’t realized he had spoken aloud until he looked up in the silence to see both men staring at him.

“Maybe, Detective?”

“Maybe, Commander. I’ve seen enough cases go wrong that I don’t believe in the media myth of slam dunks.”

Freeman rolled his eyes and Steve looked away in irritation. Steve knew he should have not said a word but lately his irritation with all the nonsense and stupidity seemed to be getting worse.
He glanced down and realized he had drawn a small ferret with the Division Commander’s face on top of it. The face was very visible and remarkably life like despite being much bigger than the animal’s body. This sudden urge to doodle had to stop. He quickly turned the pad away and doodled over the top of the drawing trying to hide it. It only seemed to get worse and draw more attention to it as both men flicked their eyes down at the pad and then at each other. Freeman glanced back at Steve, snorted, and then his normal condescending tone got worse as he performed for the Division Commander.

“Sir, we have his DNA from the scene, we have the weapon, we have the ballistics match, we have the body and of course, we have the MindTell™ recording.”

Steve shook his head and Freeman raised his eyebrows.

“Assuming the court lets us use the MindTell™. If they don’t, all we have is the body, a weapon, and a suspect. The residue test came back inconclusive and of course, after working there for years, his friggin DNA was at the scene.”

Steve looked back and forth between the two men and clearly neither one grasped the scope of the problem. Steve’s voice rose slightly as he tried to make the apparently elusive point one more time.

“If you swabbed and scanned the whole building, you would find it everywhere. Besides that, we don’t know why he did it!”

A Sunday Plug Of.......ME!!!!!!!!

I hate plugging my own stuff. No matter how you spin it the deal comes down to--- for the love of god and all that is holy, please buy my book! I don’t want to live in a van down by the river.

I’m not one of those writers who grew up wanting to write. The fire was ignited in the early 90s in a couple of college classes. But, what really got things going was the story below. This is an excerpt from the story originally written for a college class in 1993 during my final semester at The University Of Texas At Dallas. Stunningly, it was a huge hit. Emboldened by that success I expanded it a bit and submitted it to Starblade Magazine where it was very quickly accepted. That led to it being reprinted elsewhere.

Granted,  it is a bit dated as Barry pointed out when he edited Mind Slices. While I could have updated it and changed some things I felt it was important to honor the history of the piece and let it be as originally published.

Hell, Here & Now

I am Dantelus, the many-generational grandson of Dante. I have received special permission in the past to visit Hell in the hope that my works would bring a message to a world bent on
self-destruction. Unfortunately, the message does not seem to be working on society. It is once again time to journey through the dark wood to the gates of hell.

My only restriction was to not write movie sequels. While limiting my works in one sense, I can safely say that the sequels, “Lethal Weapon 16, A Time to Die” and “Batman12: The Frogman Strikes Back” were not mine. I could have made millions. Instead, I am trudging through the dark woods back to hell for more ideas after yet another box office disaster.

I came around a dark corner and, as always, the lion, the leopard, and the she-wolf sat waiting at the entrance. The lion yawned and sat back and presently went to sleep. The other two seemed to think that was a good idea and settled down then. Really, good help is so hard to find these days. This wouldn’t happen if my great-great (etc.) grandfather was still alive.

With a nod to tradition, I gave the creatures a wide berth as I stepped around them and Virgil appeared. Virgil has absolutely no sense of humor so I call him Virg. He hates being called Virg which is half the fun. It must be that old-school background of his.

“Hey, Virg! How’re they hanging, buddy?” He hates that question. I mean, he really hates that question.

Virgil looked at me coldly. “As I have told you numerous times before, Dantelus, I hate that question. As a shade, there is nothing left to hang. We are only shadows of our former selves. There are no physical bodies and therefore nothing can hang anywhere. I would suggest you save you witty repartee for your screenplays. Now, are you coming? I have a lot of work to do and I really don’t have time for this nonsense. By the way, how much did the last movie lose?”

“You already know that, don’t you? After all, this one was a bigger failure than that stupid futuristic water movie. At least my leading man didn’t try to direct.” I was annoyed and it showed. Virg had won that point and he knew it. “Let’s go.”

I fell in step behind Virgil and entered through the massive gate. We passed the banner and the line of people in the entranceway. These shades were doomed to circle behind the banner for all eternity for their failure to make a choice between good and evil during their lives. Amazingly, there seemed to be even more politicians and judges in the group than the last time I was down.

We crossed the river with the surly Charon into Hell proper and soon stood on the rim of the valley. We had entered the first circle. When we started down the winding road in the valley I noticed there was a portal in the wall along the road with closed doors.

“That appears to be an elevator, Virg. What’s going on?"

“Well, Dantelus, the state of the world has caused massive construction in Hell. We put in the elevator shaft so that the construction shades could move directly to the work areas and avoid delays and interference by going through each level. Come, get on and watch your step. Some of the rock around here is still loose and liability coverage is so expensive.”

We stepped on board and Virgil punched the button for the first circle. “But Virg, if you need more space, then why doesn’t Satan – or God, for that matter—just create it?”

“Dantelus, my friend, God and Satan are just not hands-on management anymore. Thanks to your modern society producing so much managerial talent with their MBAs and what not, God and Satan now take things pretty easy. Most days you can find them in the park, drinking beer and playing chess. Of course, God always takes white.”

“But what about the construction?”

“Well, the MBA shades decided that it would be cost-effective to put the shades that had done construction in their previous lives to work. That way, everyone works a little closer to heaven.”

As the elevator drifted downward, Virgil turned toward me. “Remember, all of this was originally created to save souls. Once his or her time is served and the proper remorse for past actions is shown, then a shade can begin the long journey to heaven. It is something like your prison system without the mockery of the accompanying justice system. We don’t have to worry about good-time, early release, et cetera. In fact—“

A thunderous roar shook the elevator suddenly. Alarmed, I asked, “What was that?”

“That was Satan, slamming the table, Dantelus. God won again, so Satan pays for the beer.”

We traveled ....

Excerpt from the short story "The Walk"

In case you have not seen it before, below is a small sample from my short story "The Walk." Set in the summer months here in Texas it might just warm you up a little...

THE WALK

“Tower Four, radio check.”

The scratchy voice was barely indiscernible from the background noise. The old radios were damn near worthless. State budget cuts meant that replacement radios weren’t coming anytime soon.

“Tower Four Operational.”

He had to say it again before dispatch was able to break through the static long enough to for him to hear, “Acknowledged. Stay cool.”

The mandatory hourly check in completed, the solitary man on the watchtower wiped his brow and put his tan ball cap back on his head. Two hours down and probably at least two more before he had his chance. He was new to the prison located deep in southwest Texas. Being the new man had drawn him the assignment in the sweltering tower that had no working air-conditioning. With no working AC, it was a little bit cooler outside on the catwalk than inside the tower. Unlike the other guards, he could not hide inside behind the glass. That suited his purposes perfectly, so he pretended to grumble for the benefit of the other guards while relishing the opportunity.

Mom always said every Sunday on the way to church, "There's no rest for the wicked, not even on Sunday," and it seemed like divine providence that he was assigned that tower. The old louvered windows were open as wide as they would go. Prayers for a breeze hadn’t worked; the tower was broiling.  The sweat frequently rolled down into his eyes despite his cap and he worried that a drop would slip into his eye at precisely the wrong time.

He stepped out the door onto the old metal catwalk, as he had several times each hour, and glanced quickly at the nearest tower. The guard there ignored him like he had all morning, which also suited his plan perfectly. The novelty of watching the new guy suffer had worn off quicker than he had thought possible. He didn't know him or any of the other guards on the towers around him, and didn't expect to live long enough to know them. While he cradled his rifle and kept a finger lightly on the trigger, his eyes scanned all around the flat Texas desert for any signs of life. Far to the north somewhere sat Midland, lost in the heat haze. All he saw were heat mirages and the occasional buzzard riding the thermals under the blazing June sun.

His radio squawked and he glanced at his watch. After he gave approval, the small procession began to cross the dusty inner courtyard below.  The four guards surrounding the prisoner ……

Sample Sunday: "Package of Pain" in "Mind Slices" collection

Have not mentioned my stuff in quite awhile so I thought with today being Sunday I would mention this twisted mystery. Previously published in the Spring 2007 edition of Mouth Full Of Bullets the story will hopefully keep readers guessing to the end. I don’t remember now what gave me this twisted little idea……

Package of Pain

Mike Thornstein sat in his truck in front of his own house as a light drizzle coated the windshield.  The package was there again, even though it wasn’t supposed to be.  He had been promised by everyone that it was all over.  The investigation was supposed to have ended months ago.  He had been cleared, publicly exonerated, but nothing changed.

It sat there wrapped in plain brown paper on his stoop.  When they first started showing up every Friday like clockwork, his colleagues had searched for the sender.  Each one had been mailed from a mailbox in Fort Worth.  Television had “Walker,” but all Mike had were bureaucratic bosses who decided the packages weren’t a threat.  When the sender wasn’t identified after a few weeks, manpower and resources were delegated elsewhere.  Mike was still on suspension while awaiting assignment, albeit very unofficially, and the packages were still coming.  Something had to be done to end it.

The windshield wipers slapped across clearing the glass.  Visible again, the package sat there waiting for him.  He turned the engine off and listened to it tick as it cooled.  The glass slowly misted over as the drizzle continued.  The package dissolved from view into globs of water on the glass. Sitting there, watching the mist fall, wasn’t going to solve the problem.

Mike heaved himself out of his old truck and crossed the leaf-strewn yard.  Rain and wind had stripped most of the leaves off the trees .....
