My Reading At Dallas Noir at the Bar Sunday 11/3

Next Sunday, I and a group of far more talented writers, will be reading at the Dallas Noir at the Bar at The Wild Detectives. Things kick off at 7:30 PM. If you are in the Dallas area, I hope you come on out and see us.

For my part, I will be reading an excerpt from my short story, The Hospital Boomerang, published in the anthology, Larceny & Last Chances: 22 Stories of Mystery & Suspense. Published by Superior Shores Press, edited by Judy Penz Sheluk, the read is available in both print and digital formats at Amazon and other vendors.

My short story is a Texas based crime fiction tale set in a small town. Our narrator is a bit bitter and has gone through some things over the years. He also has a bit of a sarcastic streak as he narrates the story.

If you can’t make it out, or just want to whet your appetite for it, I posted an excerpt from it earlier this year here on my blog.

I also discussed the story and what I was trying to do in it at Art Taylor’s The First Two Pages back in June. You can read that piece here.

Folks that have read it, seemed to like the story, as it has gotten positive praise. That includes author Rob Lopresti who reviewed it on his Little Big Crimes blog.

I hope to see you there.

My Short Story Reading at Noir At The Bar: Dallas

Last Sunday evening I read my short story, Package of Pain, at Noir At The Bar: Dallas at The Wild Detectives. Those that were there and heard it seemed to have really liked it. It was originally written around thirty years ago.  I never could get any market to pick it up so it eventually wound up in my short story collection, Mind Slices.

It is again going to see the light of day as it will appear in the anthology, Crimeucopia: Say it Again. The anthology of reprints is due out in January. If you can’t wait, please go buy Mind Slices at Amazon or Smashwords.

Noir at the Bar Dallas Sunday Evening

The event has been cancelled today and will be rescheduled. Forecasted weather for Sunday evening as well as the fact that several of the scheduled readers are dealing with serious medical issues and will be unable to participate caused the cancellation.

My Short Story Reading at Noir At The Bar

At Noir At The Bar at The Wild Detectives last month, I read my short story, "Bars Of The Heart." First published back in 1996 in the print magazine, Show and Tell, folks seemed to have liked it. I have put it on the PAGES section of my blog at https://kevintipplescorner.blogspot.com/p/short-story-bars-of-heart.html

Noir At The Bar: Dallas (Thursday Evening)

Author Michael  Pool has organized another Noir At The Bar to be held at The Wild Detectives in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas. I missed the last one back in May as I had to be at UTD with Scott. This time around I plan on being there.

Something that would not be possible without the transportation assistance provided by a friend as the long drive as well as the very limited parking in the neighborhood around the place is very problematic. I simply am unable to park and walk (limp with cane)  blocks on end as there is not any handicapped parking in the area. The venue itself is great. Especially if you link to drink as they heartily embrace the bar angle of things. My twenty years --as of this month---of sobriety, remains intact despite the stressors and incredible grief of these past few months. Drinking is not going to help and I know that. So far, I have kept that wall of my life up though it has been shaky at times.

I am looking forward to this. I hope if you are the area you can make it.

Noir At The Bar Dallas

Sorry about the late notice, but I just found out about this event scheduled for this Thursday night at 7. From looking at it on Google Maps awhile back when Jenny Milchman was in town and doing a signing there, parking in the area is limited so I would suggest going early. I can't drive that far --just trying to get Sandi to her cancer doctors in North Dallas is becoming problematic for me---so I can't tell you from first hand how the parking goes down there at The Wild Detectives.

Medical Update

Sandi's blood work was "borderline" today which means she could have a blood transfusion, but it was not mandatory. She was also symptom free though the lab results showed her to be a little more anemic than normal. This sort of thing is how she is most times. If she is running true to form this is a momentary dip and not the start of her going off the cliff again.

Since we all have been through this before the decision was made to leave her alone today. If she dips anymore over the weekend she will have to have a blood transfusion. Not only because she will be below the various thresholds making it necessary, but to try and stabilize her before the next round of chemo. it would be much better for her if her body could adjust on its own without medical intervention by way of yet another blood transfusion.

The plan is for her to go back Monday and then based on the labs firm up the schedule for the next round of chemo. This would be the fourth round of this particular chemo version and would take four to five days in the hospital again. The chemo will most likely start late next week (Thursday or Friday) though the day will depend on where she is at Monday.

Assuming there are no major setbacks, this most likely means Sandi will be in Medical City Dallas Hospital when Jenny Milchman is here on August 23rd at The Wild Detectives for her book signing with Texas Author Julia Heaberlin. Both Sandi and I are disappointed as we were really looking forward to this event and hoping to see Jenny. Health stuff the last few years has stolen a lot of fun things away from us and it most likely is going to steal another. The good news is that Sandi is still here and can be ticked off about that. Other folks we know are not nearly so lucky.
