Back In The Day
I said something similar in High School English class and got sent out in the hall for the period. Over the years I spent a lot of time outside of class sitting out in the hall. Looking back on it, I am not sure how I was supposed to learn anything getting kicked out of class. The hall was almost always better than the classroom I had been booted out of for having a sense of humor.

As an English instructor, I'll say that there is a time and place for humor. Of course, some teachers are more 'relaxed' than others.
I had a bit of a reputation as a smart alec and then there was the fact my voice carried quite well. Dangerous combination.
