Via the Houston Chronicle-- DMV prepares for sticker shock of losing inspection tag

This is going to make driving interesting.....

Personally, I still believe the inspection deal is a waste of time and money and should be completely done away with immediately. It won't ever be stopped because it is a money deal for the state.

When the zombies attack and those "lucky" enough to be alive are trying to survive and using horses to get around the horses will be inspected though the emissions test might change a bit.

Yes, it's difficult for government to give up a revenue stream. In theory the inspections had a valid reason to exist, but morphed from that to a source of $...or that seems to be the pattern.

As a member of our Village Council here, we have vastly less 'power' to inflect costs on residents, but whenever I can I try to be revenue neutral. Like with water rates, when we changed from fixed rates, we went with paying more along the lines of what you used, you paid for, so the 'rates' went up per thousand gallons but those that used little didn't supplement those that used a lot.

Now we're looking at possibly treating/filtering the water (iron and other issues). This will raise the cost of production (thus rate) but water softeners won't be needed (and thus salt) and buildups in pipes and potential discoloration of clothes when washed...so it'll balance out.

When we do need to increase rates, such as road repair, I prefer to have it voted on by the village residents, as in a levy.
