End of an Era

With the help of my brother who is in town for a visit and his truck (which once was my Dad's), and with another assist by Scott Tipple, the last of what was in storage was cleared out today and brought here to the house. I signed the paperwork vacating the place as my brother and my son loaded up. So ends a twenty year plus storage run at what is now called Life Storage out in Plano at Plano Parkway and Coit. End of an era. Upsetting to a certain extent as the last of Sandi's stuff in storage came here. We always were going to clean it out and end the deal, but it has been so much harder to deal with in the wake of everything that happened. At least, it is now done. The staff was always great with us and the same was true today as I said goodbye as they knew Sandi well and miss her almost as much as I do.

The End of Porch Time

Yesterday morning, Scott and I turned in all the keys to the old apartment. Doing so ended a thirty year plus run of living at the complex that we had moved into in late June of 1987. It was a very strange moment to turn those keys in and realize that it really was over. In many aspects, it is a relief to be out of there.

Before we went to the office, I went out on the back porch over looking the creek for one final look. Sitting out on that porch while reading and writing was one of my favorite activities. But, it wasn't just that. It was also sitting out there on the many, many nights that I could not sleep and was losing my mind over what we were going through here. A few times over the last several years, I sat out there cloaked in darkness and cried over Sandi. That porch helped me cope with so much.

Scott went up the stairs and took this final picture of me out there.

A Sandi Update

Sandi has been doing a little better the last couple of days so I took her over to Survivor Gals in Plano to get a haircut. Her hair has been driving her nuts and they take very good care of her over there. Survivor Gals knows how to handle hair when it comes back post chemo as it is very different after that happens. Each time Sandi has lost it and then it came back the hair has been very different. Also got her a couple of hats and a new fight cancer like a girl t-shirt. Most likely she will be wearing some of that a week from now when we see the cancer doc and staff again.

Plano Hail

Yesterday was one of those days where every few hours the forecast got worse. By late afternoon we had slipped into the "marginal" risk zone of severe weather. Since that often seems to mean that severe weather is definitely coming I was worried. Especially since radar seemed to indicate the storm line was beginning to the west way further out than had been predicted.

By around ten last night I knew we were in trouble for sure as there was one particular nasty storm in the line that was aimed right at us. The same storm had tried to spin up a tornado in north Fort Worth before morphing into a major hail storm. In the picture to the right from one of the local radars, the light pink area is hail to the size of golf balls. Our apartment is located just a few miles north of where it says Shepton. The Shepton deal refers to Shpeton High School where both the boys went to school.

I moved my car under the carport into the empty parking spot for the vacant apartment next door and hoped for the best. Then a few minutes later the hail began smashing down. It quickly escalated to ping pong and golf ball sized hail that tore up the few plants on the porch and broke the edges of the pots. Fortunately, we were not hit with the 50 plus mph winds that were seen elsewhere in the area. That meant that a lot of the hail came down straight or on a slight angle and missed the apartment windows and did not go under the carport.

Local media is full of images this morning showing what hail can do when it is coupled with wind and blasted into homes and cars. We got lucky. The apartment windows held despite being hit repeatedly in cringe worthy impacts and the cars seem to be okay.

Our nerves are fried. The next round of storms is supposed to be on Ester Sunday which traditionally can be a very rough day weather wise.

Jenny Milchman LIVE in Plano, Texas Today --- 3PM Book Signing

I don't talk very much here anymore about how bad we need the help, because I hate asking. The plain truth is that we do need the help. On behalf of Sandi, the boys, and myself, thank you to Jenny, Earl, and Shalanna, as well as everyone else involved....

Hi everyone,

Most of you know Kevin Tipple, and what a valued member of the mystery community he is. A writer himself, Kevin also reviews books with insight, discretion, and novelty. Many of you probably also know that Kevin and his family have been burdened with more challenges in the last few years than any one person should have to face.

As part of the world's longest book tour, I'll be making a stop in Plano, TX, and getting together with local writers such as Earl Staggs and Shalanna Collins, in the hopes of holding a really great day to support Kevin. There will be giveaways, including a Book Club Bundle of new, signed books, and a Writer's Wish List that includes a query and chapter critique, plus a writer's coaching session. I'll be leading a talk about life on the road, this crazy writing life, and local writers at work in the area. And at the end, a donation will be made.

If you know people in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, I would greatly appreciate your spreading the word, sharing the info, and in general, encouraging them to come out for a really good time.

Here's an invite: http://jennymilchman.com/tour/invitation/2014-08-09/barnes-and-noble

To circle back around, most of you also know that my thirteen year publication journey took the support of one very special member of the writing community. The way we turn out to help one of our own, in ways from small to big, is inspiring, and I'd like to contribute a small piece for Kevin.

Finally, there is only one character inspired by real life in Ruin Falls, and it happens to be somebody whose name you see here often. On Saturday, I will read that section, and raise a cheer for he way DL marries real life and books together.

My best,

Jenny

Plano Author Polly Holyoke BookSigning Saturday May 18, 2013

Plano Author Polly Holyoke will do a book signing and launch of her book The Neptune Project at Barnes and Noble, 2201 Preston Road on Saturday, May 18 at 1 pm. This is the Barnes and Noble at Park and Preston (same strip as Whole Foods and Ross among other stores) and the same store I helped stock and open years ago. In addition to refreshments and games for all, "Barnes and Noble will be giving 10% of the proceeds to My Very Own Book, a wonderful local Dallas charity that gives new books to students in Title One schools." (from Polly's website here.)

I second Polly's comments about the My Very Own Book charity. I have worked with students who didn't have any books in their homes and absolutely could not have any books of their very own because their families were unable to provide them. This is a wonderful charity doing great work and they deserve all the support they can get. You can find out more about them and their awesome work here.

FOUND!!!---Missing Plano Mom

Woke up to local media reports and just confirmed on the family facebook page that Janice Klein has been found. Sometime yesterday afternoon DFW Airport Police discovered a disorientated woman  who they took to the hospital. Sometime over night it all came together and the family was thankfully reunited.

How she got all the way out there with no keys, no cell phone, no id and no wallet remains a mystery that will be sorted out hopefully in the coming days. Thankfully she is alive and recovering in a local area hospital.

The search is over with the best possible outcome. What a great way to start the day.
