More New Reviews at Flash Bang Mysteries
We spend a lot of time at the hospital and it is hard for me to keep up with things. In recent days new reviews from both Barry and myself have appeared at Flash Bang Mysteries.

I had intended to work on something to submit for this inaugural issue. Unfortunately, things got away from me as they constantly do these days and nothing fiction writing wise was accomplished.

Jenny's Booksigning
Jenny's booksigning today was a lot of fun. Warren of Barnes and Noble could not have been nicer. Good to see Earl, Janis, Shalanna, and Jenny and her family along with everyone else.
Sandi and I are wiped out and are going to bed, but we wanted everyone to know how much we appreciated today. It means a heck of a lot to us.
Thank you all.

Jenny Milchman LIVE in Plano, Texas Today --- 3PM Book Signing
I don't talk very much here anymore about how bad we need the help, because I hate asking. The plain truth is that we do need the help. On behalf of Sandi, the boys, and
myself, thank you to Jenny, Earl, and Shalanna, as well as everyone else
involved....
Hi everyone,
Most of you know Kevin Tipple, and what a valued member of the mystery community he is. A writer himself, Kevin also reviews books with insight, discretion, and novelty. Many of you probably also know that Kevin and his family have been burdened with more challenges in the last few years than any one person should have to face.
As part of the world's longest book tour, I'll be making a stop in Plano, TX, and getting together with local writers such as Earl Staggs and Shalanna Collins, in the hopes of holding a really great day to support Kevin. There will be giveaways, including a Book Club Bundle of new, signed books, and a Writer's Wish List that includes a query and chapter critique, plus a writer's coaching session. I'll be leading a talk about life on the road, this crazy writing life, and local writers at work in the area. And at the end, a donation will be made.
If you know people in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, I would greatly appreciate your spreading the word, sharing the info, and in general, encouraging them to come out for a really good time.
Here's an invite: http://jennymilchman.com/tour/invitation/2014-08-09/barnes-and-noble
To circle back around, most of you also know that my thirteen year publication journey took the support of one very special member of the writing community. The way we turn out to help one of our own, in ways from small to big, is inspiring, and I'd like to contribute a small piece for Kevin.
Finally, there is only one character inspired by real life in Ruin Falls, and it happens to be somebody whose name you see here often. On Saturday, I will read that section, and raise a cheer for he way DL marries real life and books together.
My best,
Jenny

Review: "Ruin Falls: A Novel" by Jenny Milchman
A vacation can highlight the
strain inside a marriage. The simple thing at home in the normal confines
becomes a bit more problematic out on the road. Throw in the stress of taking
two small children on the road and that strain is increased. Liz Daniels knew
that there were some issues in her marriage to Paul even if she never fully acknowledged
them. Minor control stuff and usually she could find a work around to deal with
it without anything turning into a major problem. Much harder to work around
when one is traveling on vacation.
It is a rare event to be on
vacation from their home in the mountains of Wedeskyull, New York. The reason
for the trip to the plains of western New York is even rarer as they are going
to see Paul's parents. The grandparents have seen the kids, eight year old Reid
and six year old Alley, only a couple of times and rarely speak to their own
son. This was Paul’s rather surprising idea, but one Liz went with and even
welcomed a bit. Though there have been moments, little flashes, as they
traveled down the road on a brutally hot day that have caused Liz to be a
little concerned about their trip. She has had second thoughts about the trip
and is a bit spooked. But, Liz counts on Paul to be what he has always been--a
rock and lifeline when she is buffeted by her own emotions and fears.
The day has taken a toll on
all of them as it has been so hot and exhausting that Paul suggests they stop
for the night at a hotel and allow everyone to rest up for the family reunion
the next day. They are only an hour out from his parents, but spending the night
will allow everyone to recover and will help tremendously with the kids. It is
a wonderful idea and before long the family is in a hotel suite and having a
good time.
That luxurious break turns
in a brutal nightmare when Liz wakes up the next morning and discovers the
children are missing. A frantic search begins in a tale that constantly
ratchets up the suspense while adding new characters and story lines. A mother
herself who has spent months and thousands of miles on the road, Jenny Milchman
weaves a tale of a mother’s frantic desperation far from home where there is
little support. Not a sequel to her incredibly good Cover of Snow this book
is a stand alone suspenseful tale and a very complicated read.
It is also very different not
just in terms of substance, but in style of writing. While the psychological
aspects certainly played a strong role in Cover
of Snow they are even more
present here in multiple ways which can’t be detailed beyond what has been
stated without creating spoilers. Those who want their books straightforward and
moving quickly will find plenty to fault here as the multiple storylines and
multiple points of view feature a high level of internal contemplation as
scenes and settings are explained in great detail. That results in a suspense
driven novel with occasional thriller type moments as the mystery is gradually
resolved. It’s also a good stand alone read.

Barry's Reviews: "Cover Of Snow" by Jenny Milchman
It has been quite some
time since Barry contributed a review that was not specifically FFB related. Please
welcome back Barry to the blog today as he reviews a favorite of mine. Jenny’s new book RUIN FALLS: A Novel is scheduled to be released April 22nd. Jenny is also about to launch yet another book tour and currently plans to be in the Dallas area on August 9th. More details as they become available. If you have not read Cover Of Snow---you really should.
COVER OF SNOW (2013) by
Jenny Milchman
Reviewed by Barry Ergang
After a peaceful night's sleep, Nora Hamilton awakens on a
bitterly cold and snowy January morning in the Adirondacks
to a nightmare. Her husband Brendan, a police officer in the small upstate New York town of Wedeskyull, has committed
suicide. Her grief is as incessant as her determination to find out why. He'd
given no indication that he was depressed about anything, so what drove him to
this desperate act?
Nora's pursuit of the truth pits her against certain townspeople
she thought were her friends; introduces her to strangers who become unlikely allies
(readers won't soon forget Dugger); exposes her subtle conflicts with family
members and a not-so-subtle one with her mother-in-law; puts her and others in
mortal danger and, literally and symbolically, pits her against the treacherous
snow that blankets the region, both concealing and revealing frigid current and
decades-old brutal realities and concomitant attitudes.
The trepidations and mysteries in this suspenseful gem will
have readers turning pages late into the night to find out what happens next, not
least because many a chapter closes with a cliffhanger. Jenny Milchman has
crafted an excellent debut novel studded with turns of phrase that add vividity
without distracting from the headlong narrative thrust.
The novel is not without what some readers will perceive as
flaws. There are unanswered questions about key events, some loose ends are
left dangling, and the fates of some of the characters, major and minor, go
unexplained. These didn't bother me personally; not every issue in life has a
definitive resolution, and not every question gets answered. I can highly
recommend Cover of Snow to fans of
high-tension suspense fiction, and in fact recommended it to a number of
friends even before I'd finished reading it. I'm looking forward to Jenny
Milchman's next novel.

Interview With Jenny Milchman
As a reviewer I am supposed to be objective at all times about every author and their books. But, I am a reader too and that results in being a fan at times. One of those cases is with Jenny Milchman. You might have heard of her. She wrote this most excellent book called Cover Of Snow.
She has written a second book that will be out later this year. I suggested she called it Shawl of Heat, but she didn't go for that. I came up with another couple of titles and instead she added some character based on Earl Staggs. Not sure what is up with that. I think that dude gets enough press online as it is.
Anyway, Jenny is over here today being interviewed so go check it out. And, if somehow, you have not read Cover of Snow get going. I recently reviewed it here if my saying it is excellent needs more detail.

FFB Review: "Cover Of Snow" by Jenny Milchman
Friday
means Friday’s Forgotten Books hosted here by Patti Abbott. This week I thought
I would do something a little bit different than normal. Clearly, Cover Of Snow, published last year is
not really a forgotten book. This debut novel by Jenny Milchman was one of my
five favorite books of last year. It is now up for the Mary Higgins Clark Award
from the Mystery Writers of America. If you have not read it you really should.
Especially since the next book from this talented author is coming in the spring…
Everything changed for Nora Hamilton that January
morning when she woke up alone. Brendan, her police officer husband, was not in
the bed with her. The normal morning sounds he would have made were not
present. No sounds of the shower, no smell of morning coffee, no nothing as the
strange silence stretched on and on. She will soon discover the silence exists
for a good reason-- the man who made love to her the night before has committed
suicide.
Devastated and distraught, Nora just wants to know
why he did it. The “why” of it threatens to destroy her and makes her question
everything. What drove him to this act--so out of character with no warning at
all--and left her alone in the frozen small town of Wedeskyull in upstate New
York. A frozen old place---literally and metaphorically--- she moved to for Brendan
and where she is very much an outsider. An outsider not to be trusted and who does
not understand her place in the community as well as the fact that things are
the way they are because they have always been that way and will always be that
way. Nora’s quest to get answers to why Brendan killed himself will take time
and come at great cost to nearly everyone.
Cover
of Snow is the debut novel of Jenny Milchman. Like
any good mystery, nothing is what it seems and everyone has secrets to hide. Deceit
is an art form long practiced by all and such is the case here. Nora is
surrounded by smiling and friendly enemies who expect her to go back where she
belongs in the wake of her husband’s death. Her unwillingness to just quietly
go away sets the stage for a steady increasing level of suspense as the reader
turns the pages.
This is a powerfully good book where the setting is
just as alive as the other characters.
What legendary author James Lee Burke has done for Louisiana, author
Jenny Milchman has done for upper New York in winter. The cold frozen landscape
is always present lurking, waiting to kill throughout the suspenseful read. A
living breathing force that is present on every single page where the
characters are inside and warm for the moment or outside in the elements.
Much is at work here in this complicated read. This
review does not give the book justice. You simply have to read it.

as posted on various lists today.....
Hi everyone,
If you live anywhere near San Diego's Mysterious Galaxy, please come out tomorrow between 10 and 2! The bookstore is celebrating its 20th birthday, with cake, books, and authors (what could be better)? I have these moments on the trip that feel almost like a split-personality. I walk into a bookstore and see my books and I almost--almost--exhale. I'm-really-doing-this-it's-true kind of thing. And then there are other moments where I wonder who this person is, standing up there with all the Real Authors and pretending to be one of them.
I have a feeling tomorrow may be more like the latter than the former. I would love to see you! So please come for cake and readings and of course, to celebrate one of the best mystery bookstores in the world: http://www.mystgalaxy.com/event/mg-sd-20th-birthday-bash-051113
