How
Writing Adds Mystery To Your Life by Gordon Sellon
My dad was always
a big fan of the classic Sherlock Holmes novels. When I was younger, I remember
my first introduction was to the 1984 television series. Thinking about the
creepiness of “The Solitary Cyclist” still sends a shiver up my spine to this
day.
For as long as I
can remember, I have always been drawn to mystery stories because of the
intrigue of what's going to happen next. How will these characters' lives be
changed based on the events unfolding? What will be learned or discovered?
One of my first
major writing projects was a series of mystery short stories. I loved the idea
of shocking my reader with twists that cause them to question everything
they’ve read prior. Twists that would maybe even give them a new perspective on
life outside of my crafted stories.
Things ended up
taking a different turn however and my first published book, Better
Relationships would be on my counselling center experience. This
spring, I was talking to someone who read my book the previous year. They
revealed to me that my written words helped them reflect upon their past
abusive tendencies. It helped them leave a toxic relationship, and then upon
discussing the book with a friend, helped their friend leave one as well.
It was a pleasant
surprise that certainly wasn't what I was expecting when waking up that day. It
made me feel great to have a positive impact on people's lives like that. But
it also got me thinking about what writing adds to your own life.
Writing is a great
hobby and exercise because it forces you to think and collect your thoughts.
Publishing these thoughts then brings others into the creative process. Your
ideas are refined by feedback and reverberate through your readers. Someone’s
life could be deeply impacted by your work in ways you can’t predict. And to
me, there’s no more intriguing story than that.
